Women cagers host Indiana, Ohio St. -The Michigan Daily - Friday, February 6, 1987 - Page 11 BLUE'S TOUGH SCHEDULE CONTINUES 6M51 grapplers seek turnaround By ROB LEVINE The women's basketball team tips off the second half of the Big Ten season this weekend with games at Crisler Arena against Indiana (tonight, 6 p.m.) and Ohio State (Sunday, 2 p.m.). Michigan's only Big Ten win this season was a 65-63 triumph over Indiana in January. Wolverine assistant coach Debbie Norman anticipates a physical game from the Hoosiers. "We expect a close, tight game and expect them to go inside to their three big guns - Karna Abram, Rosie Carlton, and Cindy Baumgarner." The weekend will not get any easier when the Wolverines (1-8 in the conference, 8-10 overall) face the 11th-ranked Buckeyes (9- 0, 16-3). LAST MONTH at Columbus, .OSU blew out Michigan 72-48. "We definitely hope to do a lot better than we did last time," Norman said. "We got a little shell-shocked and put ourselves in a very big hole from the beginning." The Buckeyes are on track to win the Big Ten Title and are not looking past Michigan. "They're going to definitely be out to play hard because next week they go to Iowa, who's in second place in the Big 10," said Norman. "They're not going to have any let up now." Even though the Wolverines are mired in last place in the conference, the team has shown sparks of potential this season. "We've had some better games, but unfortunately they don't show up in the win column," said Norman. "We had a very good game against Illinois. "We played very aggressively against Iowa, but their experience and depth took over in the end." By BILL ZOLLA Michigan head coach Dale Bahr's biggest concern coming into this season was that his inexperienced wrestling squad would go through periods of inconsistency. Lately however, the fortunes of the Wolverine wrestlers have been very consistent - consistently bad. The wrestlers, worn down both physically and psychologically, reached a low point in the season last Saturday when they were trounced by Penn State, the nation's number one squad. The loss culminated a week of grief and concern over wrestler Mike Murdoch, who remains in critical condition following an auto accident the previous week. The Wolverines (6-4-1), still ranked 16th in the country despite numerous injuries, hope to start improving their condition this weekend, with matches at Crisler Arena against Minnesota tonight and Iowa State on Sunday. MINNESOTA, under new coach J. Robinson, is another team that has experienced inconsistency this season. Despite some early losses, the Gophers (7-7,0-3) have wrestled well lately. "The Gophers struggled early in the season, but now it looks like they've turned it around. We're concerned because they're going to have all their aces in the lineup, while we've still got some holes," said Bahr. "If we start off well in the opening matches, we should be able to beat them. - It should be an excellent match that goes right down to the wire." Minnesota is led by Tim Manning (26-9) at 142 pounds., Dave Dean (25-8-2) at 190, and Rod Sandee (22-5-2) at 167. Manning and Dean are both ranked seventh nationally in their weight divisions. Michigan's prospects appear much dimmer against Iowa St. The Cyclones are ranked third in the country with a 10-1 record and are favored to give the Wolverines their PRINTING HIGH QUALITY LOW PRICES SINCE 1973 1002 PONTIAC TR. u-v99413 67- second lopsided defeat in as many weeks. Iowa St. is loaded with candidates for NCAA championships. Tim Krieger (17- 0) is ranked first in the nation at 150 pounds, Kevin Jackson (20-1) second at 167, and Bill Kelly (16-2- 2) fifth at 126. "Iowa St. - is a traditionally strong team. This year they have exceptional talent," said Bahr. "They're very similar to Penn State, older and well balanced. They'll be a very difficult match." The Wolverines were encouraged this week by the news that their top wrestler, Doug Wyland a 118 pounder, will soon return to action following a month long bout with mononucleosis. Another piece of good news is that Tony Latora, who injured his knee last week, will wrestle this weekend. Bahr knows that the only thing his team can do is be patient. "We're weathering some low points right now. We've got to keep a positive attitude and keep working hard. If we can get everyone healthy by March, I think we can really make a strong run for the runner-up spot in the Big Ten." Night baseball proposed Jfor (Tubs SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A bill introduced in the Illinois Senate would change state law to allow the Chicago Cubs to play night baseball at Wrigley Field, the only major-league stadium without lights. The bill, introduced by Sen. Doris Karpiel, R-Roselle, would delete a portion of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act that applies night noise emission regulations to professional baseball, football and soccer games. The existing law has effectively barred the Cubs from playing night games because Wrigley Field is in a heavily populated residential area. "WE HAVE Wrigley Field, which is a beautiful, historic place that the Cubs want to stay in, but they are in a bind," Karpiel said yesterday. "They're not going to be able to playspostseason games there without lights." "Something has to be done to keep them there or they will have to leave Wrigley," Karpiel said. In addition to the state law, there is a Chicago city ordinance that bans night games. Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth has said any postseason games the Cubs appear in would have to be played at night because television networks want larger viewing audiences.
