Has it been more than 149, the number of goals that Michigan has allowed this year? Defense is the main reason why Michigan is in seventh place in the CCHA, and the statistics prove it. Lake Superior, the Wolverines' opponents this weekend, has allowed 111 goals and is in third place. First-place Bowling Green and second-place Michigan State have allowed 92 goals and 91 goals respectively. Opponents have scored 164 goals against Miami, and as one would expect the Redskins are in the CCHA basement. Defense will do it every time. DEFENSE is also the reason that Michigan has split its last six games. If the Wolverines hope to M icers get defensive to try to beat Lakers at own game move up in the standings or to make an impact in the playoffs, they must continue to improve in this area. "Our overall pride in our defensive game is starting to assert itself," said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. "A lot of losing teams only worry about scoring goals. "When they find out how to win, they realize that it is a team game where everybody sacrifices and everybody contributes." This is a lesson that the Michigan squad has learned since Christmas vacation. The forwards' '(This year) we won our first game at Michigan State since I've been here, our first game at Ferris State, and our first at Western Michigan. Sharples has rewarded his teammates for their help by repeatedly making the big saves. AND AS coach Berenson said, "Defense makes offense." Michigan travels to Sault Saint Marie with its new found knowledge to face the Lakers (17- 10). "We have not beaten Lake Superior since I'vebbeen here," Berenson said. "They have won games they should not have won, and they have won games they should have won. But this year we've done a lot of firsts. "We won our first game at Michigan State since I've been here, our first game at Ferris State, and our first at Western Michigan. I think we are due to win at Lake Superior." EASIER SAID than done, though. The Lakers have none of the league's leading scorers, but their two goaltenders are among the CCHA's top six. Randy Exelby and Mike Greenlay have come to the rescue for an often injured Laker squad. Exelby has started the last eight games, and sports a 3.45 goals against average and a .871 save percentage. "Exelby has played extremely well, especially of late," said Lake Superior head coach Frank Anzalone. "He has been a positive factor in the way the team has maintained where they are." But it has not been an easy task. "We run into a lot of teams that get exceptionally psyched up to play us," Anzalone said. "Our games are all very tough. Each game that we play against another team is a big series for them." 4 Daily rnoto by JUMN MUNSUN Michigan defenseman Brad Turner heads up ice in a game last weekend against Western Michigan.
