Cagers sink to bottom Lines y' '' '' .-- . By ADAM SCHEFTER Even though Friday night's hockey game is old news by now, the memories of that night will linger in my mind in the months to come. In short, it was a hockey reporter's worst possible nightmare. When I was picked up by one of my fellow reporters at 5:15 p.m., the snow was steadily falling. It only got worse once we got on to the highway. During the two hour drive to beautiful Kalamazoo, the driving conditions became worse and worse. The roads were covered with ice, vision was horrible, and the wind blew the car to and fro. I must have seen 20 cars buried in a snow ditch off the side of the road. After seeing all these cars derailed, my colleague informed me that his car was destitute of snow tires. How wonderful I thought, I'll be spending my Friday evening on I-94 in the bitter cold. More than once, his car lost its traction and began sliding uncontrollably from lane to lane, causing heart palpitations galore. I really thought I might pass out. What a dedicated hockey reporter will subject himself to just amazes me. We finally made it there, in one piece no less. We picked up our two press passes, and went inside to find out that we had missed the first ten minutes of the game, as well as the first two Wolverine goals. This should have been the least of my problems. Life amo ng the nuzsses Another ominous sign came when I found out that only one reporter from the Daily was allowed to sit in the press box since it was so small. Being the nice guy that I am, I sacrificed the seat in the press box for the dubious distinction of sitting with the loud and obnoxious Western fans. Instantly, I noticed the fan next to me derived great pleasure from taking out his large, red, plastic horn and blowing it in my ear as loud and as long as possible. He made Wham! sound pleasurable. And when this bozo-brained moron wasn't playing sweet music in my ear, the P.A. announcer picked up the slack. He was even more annoying. He spoke so much that if he shut up during one stoppage of play it was a minor miracle. If I could suggest a career change for him, a football team's tackling dummy would fill the bill. Not only was he talking incessantly, but he was talking nonsense. "Hey all yooouuu Broncooo fans, lets all give a big thanks to Kalamazoo's car dealers: Ziegler- Lincoln Mercury, John Kessler Pontiac, and Metro Buick dealers. Thank yooouuu car coaches." ...oh what a night I dreaded each'time the linesman blew his whistle. The whistle blew again, oh no, oh.... "Attention. Chad Carlson, someone is looking for yooouuu behind the bandstand in section nine." Blocking this idiot out of my mind was as easy as completing a triathalon in 100-degree temperatures. Suddenly the puck went flying into the stands. I figured this might catch him off guard and I would be relieved of hearing his voice for at least another minute. I should have known better. "It's at times like this that we must be reminded of the nature of the game of hockey. The puck is a dangerous object so keep your eye on it while it is in play." Luckily at this time the second period was coming to a close and I only had to put up with this nuisance another 20 minutes. I decided to go down to the penalty-box area, where mighty-mouth was located, and see what possessed this monster. Toot-toot-Tootsie, goodbye Upon my arrival, the two people next to him decided to throw individually wrapped Tootsie Rolls into the stands. They were throwing them right by me and by the reaction of the fans you would have thought that they were throwing out priceless 1956 Mickey Mantle baseball cards. Fans dove for these candies with no regard for their bodies... or mine. Countless numbers of fans landed on top of me. Open hands landed on my groin. All this for a Tootsie Roll. Hell, I would have brought 3,000 Tootsie Rolls with me and handed them out to each person with a ticket stub if I had known this was going to happen. I wondered if this all was really taking place. Was someone playing a bad joke on me? The third period began and so did Mr. Mouth. At least Michigan had a commanding 5-3 lead. "All work and no play can make a college student edgy and rotund. Take part in campus recreational activities.." Then Western scored a goal..."Yooouuurrr Broncooo goal scored by... Then the horn, then the announcer, then the horn. Enough, enough. I had to, get out of this dungeon of hell. Then another Bronco goal and then another anecdote. "It's not an Olympic sport yet, but it's a great time to start playing inner-tube water polo. Join now!" Western proceeded to score the winning goal. The night was a total loss. At least the game was over and I could get out of the arena and Kalamazoo. By GREG MOLZON In a season that has become a very long and difficult struggle, the women's basketball team lost its fourth and fifth consecutive conference games this weekend to drop into last place in the Big Ten. On Friday night in Minneapolis, the Wolverines fell to Minnesota, a squad that had lost 14 straight conference games, 81-73. The 13th- ranked Iowa Hawkeyes trounced Michigan 75-54 on Sunday in Iowa City. After starting the season with a 7-2 record in nonconference play, the Wolverines are now 8-10 overall, 1-8 in the Big Ten. AGAINST Minnesota, the Wolverines weren't strong enough to stop the Golden Gophers' strong inside game which came up with a phenomenal 35 offensive rebounds. Forward Molly Tadich scored a career-high 32 points and added 21 rebounds for the winners. Minnesota also converted 29-of- 49 free throw attempts, while Michigan only shot nine free throws, making seven. Three Wolverines fouled out of the contest. W omen drop games to IowMinnesota Lorea Feldman continued her outstanding play in leading the Wolverines with 19 points. Vonnie Thompson added 14 points and eight assists and Sharon Sonntag pitched in with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Coach Bud Van De Wege's team was faced with a most difficult task Sunday when it had to play in Carver-Hawkeye Arena where the Big Ten preseason favorite, Iowa, has won 42-of-47 games since coach Vivian Stringer took over the post. ALTHOUGH the Wolverines lost by 21 points, Van De Wege thought his team played well. "We probably played our best game in three weeks. But the fact of the matter is that Iowa is probably the most talented team in the league, top to bottom," said Van De Wege. The Hawkeyes were led by their first-team all-Big Ten guard, Michelle Edwards, who poured In 23 points. Forward Lisa Long tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds for Iowa, which is currently ib second place in the Big Ten with a conference record of 8-1, 15=4 overall. The Wolverines hurt their cause by committing 25 turnovers and didn't reach double figures until 8:26 remained in the first half. At that point, they were down 27-11. Michigan trailed by 13 at the half and played respectably the rest of the way, but was unable to close the gap under 11 points. Freshman Leslie Spicer contributed her best game of the year, scoring 12 points and hauling in seven rebounds. Feldman and Thompson each added 10 points and Lisa Reynolds had eight points and 13 rebounds. AP Top. Twenty Rec. Pts. 1. UNLV (48) 21-1 1243 2. Indiana (10) 17-2 1181 3. N. Carolina (4) 18-2 1148 4.
