Neither team has been very predictable this season in the CCHA. Both have seen their ups and their downs. Case in point: three weeks ago Illinois-Chicago swept the Wolverines (10-20) in Ann Arbor. Since then Michigan has played strongly against Ferris State and Michigan State. In fact, omitting the UIC series, the Wolverines have played reasonably well since Christmas after a shaky first half. "IT DOESN'T come as a surprise to me," Michigan head coach Red Berenson said, "but we're pleased that the team is starting to jell now and particularly on the road." A win at Lawson Arena on riday night would give the 'olverines the most road wins in the month of January since 1964- 5. Western Michigan (16-14), on the other hand, is fighting off a slump. Its 7-5 win last Saturday against Lake Superior State snapped a five-game losing streak in the CCHA. Injuries to some key people explains some of the Broncos' problems. Freshman center Paul Polillo has played the last four games with a cast on his hand, and assistant captain Henry Fung's knee injury makes him doubtful for this weekend. DESPITE ITS recent woes, Western remains in the hunt for fourth place, the final playoff spot with the home ice advantage. Its 11-13 league mark puts it one point behind fourth-place UIC. "We'll see how badly our players want home ice in how hard they work in this weekend's series against Michigan and in every game for the rest of the season," head coach Bill Wilkinson said. The Broncos have won two of three from Michigan this season including an 8-2 decision in their last meeting in the championship game of the Great Lakes Invitational. "Billly Horn is a big part of their success in goal," Berenson said, "and (Wayne) Gagne on defense is always dangerous against us." Gagne, a defenseman, is the CCHA's leading overall scorer (10 goals, 57 assists, 67 points). Horn (13-11, 3.77 goals against average) is a workhorse in net. The sophomore netminder sports an impressive .893 save percentage. WESTERN ALSO boasts a potent power play with Gagne, Polillo (16-42-58), and the league's leading goal scorer, Rob Bryden (32-22-54). "They're a team we respect," Berenson said, "and we're just going to have to shut them down." Wilkinson shares Berenson's sentiments. "I think we have to keep (Brad) Jones and (Brad) McCaughey intact. They always do real well against us." McCaughey notched a hat trick against the Broncos earlier in the season in Ann Arbor. Right wing Billy Powers will try to spark the Wolverine offense in this weekend's home-and-home series with Western Michigan. Grapplers By DOUGLAS VOLAN Michigan's wrestling team will have a chance to do what every team in the country wants to do - knock off Penn State, the top- ranked team in the nation. The Wolverines have been looking forward to tomorrow night's meet at Crisler Arena all season. The excitement vanished, however, after Saturday night's tragedy, in which Wolverine freshman Mike Murdoch was critically injured in a car crash., "We're not as concerned with who we wrestle as we are with how Mike is doing," said Coach Dale Bahr. "Every time I hear anything about his condition, I have six to host No. 1 Penn St. phone numbers of guys on the team who want to hear anything that happens." If the Wolverines can concentrate on wrestling, this could be a great meet. "The whole team is down," said team member Mike Amine. "But we've got to set that aside (Murdoch's accident) and be there for Penn State." Penn State (11-0-1), which boasts five 1986 NCAA qualifiers, including two All-Americans, has not lost in its last 23 meets (21-0- 2). In spite of its record, Coach Rich Lorenzo is concerned about Michigan (6-3-1). "We're not taking anything for granted," he said. "We're expecting a real tough match. I know they've got some really outstanding individuals. Lorenzo noted the Nitanny Lions are especially wary of Michigan's John Fisher, Joe Pantaleo, and Amine. Penn State is led by All- Americans Jim Martin at 118, and Greg Elinsky at 167. The Wolverines, without All-America candidate Doug Wyland, who has mononucleosis, face a difficult matchup with Martin. "(Not having Wyland) is going to hurt us in the meet," said Bahr. Stepping in for Murdoch at 150 will be sophomore Kyle Garcia. "I'm feeling bad that Murdoch's out of the lineup, but I'm glad that I'm getting a chance to get into the lineup," said Garia. "There are a lot of even matchups," Lorenzo said.
