Men's Swimming vs. Illinois Friday, 7:30 p.m. IM Building SPORTS Tuesday, January 27, 1987 Wrestling vs. #1 Penn State Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Crisler Arena the Michigan Daily Blue Lines By DARREN JASEY For those of you who could not find a ticket for Saturday night's Michigan-Michigan State hockey game at Yost Ice Arena you missed a classic. Both goaltenders, the Spartans' Bob Essensa and the Wolverines' Warren Sharples, controlled the game and the Spartans outmuscled the Wolverines to win 2-1. "That was a real good college hockey game," Michigan State coach Ron Mason said. "Tonight the interest was there and the crowd was there." "When you see a college hockey game end up in a 2-1 score you know the goaltenders played well," said Michigan coach Red Berenson. "Tonight there were no soft goals." The game was like a tough boxing match (as if people don't already get the two sports confused). The lightly regarded welterweight against the powerful heavyweight. First, the defending champion Spartans delivered two first-period goals to stagger the. Wolverines. Then, in the second period, the home team flurried and finally buried one past the tough Spartan netminder. The scoreboard read Spartans 2, Wolverines 1. Both teams exchanged glancing blows in the third period but nothing damaging, and the Spartans held on for the 2-1 victory. The Esensa of Goaltending Sharples and Essensa did a good job of making Saturday night's game look like a boring defensive affair. Both teams, however, generated plenty of scoring chances in an action packed game. Sharples saved 31 and Essensa 30. PARRISH - Maintaining their perfect records, the Michigan men's and women's swimming teams both romped over the weekend. The men's team traveled to The Purdue Invitational and dominated the two-day meet which featured four other Big Ten schools (Purdue, Ohio State, Indiana, and Michigan State). The women swept a home meet against Wisconsin and Indiana. The men's team (9-0) racked up 806 points to beat second-place Indiana by 125 points. Strong overall performances were given by Wolverines Dave Kerska, Dan Dewhirst, and Martin Moran. KERSKA WON two events, the 100-yard free (45.28) and 200- yard free (1:40.65), and gave a season's best performance in the 500-yard free placing second with a time of 4:32.11. The team captain also swam the fastest time of the meet in the 50-yard free (20.99), but was entered as an exhibition, and therefore scored no points. Dewhirst swam three season-best times at the competition, placing second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:04.20), third in the 200 breastroke (2:07.24), and third in the 100 breastroke (59.97). He also gave a strong performance ir the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.25). Moran proved once.again that he is the odds-on favorite to dominate the Big Ten conference meet in the butterfly events by winning the 100 and 200-yard distances in times of 50.69 and 1:50.06, respectively. Another notable of the meet was Jan-Erick Olsen. Olsen won the 200-yard breastroke (2:03.40), and placed second in the 100 breastroke (58.37) as well as the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.34). Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek was not convinced that the meet k Big T was a preview of the Big Ten championships in five weeks. "This meet was more of an indication of where each team is at the moment," said Urbanchek. "I think that we'll get a lot of good swims from the Iowa and Indiana teams at the conference meet." THE WISCONSIN and Illinois women's swimming coaches, though, picked their Michigan rivals as the Big Ten favorite after the Wolverines defeated the Badgers 71-42 and Hoosiers 74-39 Saturday. The women's team ran its record to 8-0 with the wins. "Michigan has the best team in the Big Ten," said Wisconsin coach Carl Johansson. "They've got the most depth and the most good swimmers. If they swim OK at the conference meet, they'll win. If they swim well they'll win by a lot. All they have to do is keep healthy." n rivals Highlighting the performances of the women's meet was Michigan's Candice Quinn, who won the 200-yard breastroke in 2:22.68. Quinn cut two seconds off of her previous best time in that event. She also had a career best in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.65) in which she finished third.
