Men's Swimming vs. Illinois Friday, 7:30 p.m. IM Building The Michigan Daily SPORTS Monday, January 26! 1987 Wrestling vs. #1 Penn State Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Crisler Arena Page 8 'NI' comc By SCOTT SHAFFER This was the weekend that Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson was waiting for. Throughout the year, he has used ten freshman in the lineup, and as the losses piled up, sometimes his talk about their potential seemed like idle promises. But not this weekend. The Wolverines (10-20) split two games with national champion Michigan State (24-6-1), beating the Spartans 8-2 in East Lansing Friday and then losing a 2-1 classic that was dominated by spectacular goaltending. FRESHMEN BRYAN Deasley, Mike Moes and Rob Brown all got key goals in Friday's win, while rookie Warren Sharples provided the Wolverines with spectacular goaltending all weekend, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association Co- player of the week honors (sharing it with Ohio State's Jeff Madill). "We're starting to see some of these kids improve and that's why our team is getting stronger," said Berenson. After dominating the opener, the Wolverines returned home looking for the sweep. They played well, but could not overcome the 2-0 lead that Michigan State held after the first period. In addition to Spartan goals by Don McSween and Mitch Messier, the first period also featured a five-on-five brawl. Michigan's Myles O'Connor and Kevin Miller traded several punches, while State defenseman Tom Tilley snuck in a few shots while the officials tried to control the action. When it was over, each team was assessed with five minor penalties. But the real story was the goaltending. After a Brad Jones goal at 13:17 of the second period, the Wolverines close, but no State sweep couldn't buy a goal off Michigan State's Bob Essensa. Essensa stopped 30 shots and improved his record to 16- 0. Although Sharples doesn't have the stats to compare to Essensa's, he is on the way. In his last four games, he has allowed 8 goals and made 108 saves. And he has lowered his goals against average from 5.60 to 5.08 over that span. "With all the energy both teams had, the 2-1 score was a tribute to both goaltenders," said Berenson. "Neither one was giving up any soft goals." On Friday, it took Michigan just 16 seconds to score when Deasley brought the puck from behind the net and stuffed it in for the early lead. MICHIGAN WAS leading 2-1 late in the first period when Moes stole the puck and beat goalie Norm Foster for a shorthanded score. The lead was cut to 3-2 in the second before a puck hit Foster on his jaw, causing a cut that required eight stitches to close. Spartan coach Ron Mason brought in Essensa, the other half of his goalie platoon. However, it didn't matter to the Wolverines who consistently beat the Spartans to the puck and peppered Essensa for five goals in a little more than 20 minutes of action, including a shorthanded tally by Brown to close the scoring. "I got thrown into a situation where I wasn't ready to play, and it really showed," said Essensa, who began the series with a 2.57 goals against average. But Essensa alone can't be blamed for the loss. The Spartans' play was consistently flat and the Wolverines took full advantage of it. "It was target practice out there." said Mason. "The guys weren't preventing much at all." _ Daily Photo by JOHN MUNSON Michigan goalie Warren Sharples makes a save against Spartan forward Bill Shibicky en route to a 2-1 Wolverine loss at Yost Ice Arena Saturday night. The Wolverines stunned the dedending national champions Friday night in East Lansing, 8-2.
