New UGLi lounge nears completion The Michigan Daily - Monday, January 26, 1987 -Page 5 LSA grapples with troubled depts. By ROSE MARY WUMMEL After a four-month delay, the new UGLi lounge is almost ready to offer hungry students a place- to take a study break. The lounge was originally proposed in October, 1985 after the UGLi's fourth floor lounge was replaced by a microcomputing cen - ter in 1984. The renovation, at first expected. to be completed by September, 1986, will be finished within the next two weeks. UNIVERSITY Vice-President for Student Services Henry Johnson said the lounge's original renova - tion schedule was unrealistic. Construction of a bench and the delivery of vending machine parts has been behind schedule. Johnson added that the renova - tion's original cost estimate, $25,000 -27,000, was accurate. Most of the study lounge is now complete. It boasts modular chairs, circular tables, new wall paper, and a built-in bench that spans the width of the lounge. THE LOUNGE already houses the UGLi's current newspapers and a fiction book rack. It will also contain a board for students to leave messages to friends. And for people who wish to enjoy the lounge late into the night, the UGLi offers the advantages of SAFEWALK, the campus-wide escort service. The biggest attraction for hungry students will be the installation of soda, hot drink, and candy machines which will mark the final step in the renovation project. Barbara MacAdam, an associate librarian in charge of the redecora - tion, feels a place where students can legally snack will prevent them from taking food and drink into the stacks. THE LOUNGE is also expected to minimize the UGLi's problems with noise and social - Read U68 Deaie izing. Ellen Mudler, an LSA junior, predicted the lounge "will keep socializing away from study areas and centralize it." But LSA freshman Pam Cannon disagreed, saying the new lounge "will probably make the UGLi even more social." The creation of the lounge is one of the final phases in a $500,000 renovation project for the entire building begun three years ago by library director David Norden. "The library is making a serious commitment to the quality of student life," said MacAdam. "The lounge is just the beginning of an ongoing project to meet students' needs." THE RENOVATION has, however, caused problems. The additional lighting on the first floor has left three-fourths of the basement without lights for the past few days. An emergency lighting system has made it possible for students to strain their eyes and search for books, but studying in any of the basement's study lounges has been completely impossible. Officials believe the problem has been caused by a malfunctioning transformer. The UGLi is 30-years- old, making repairs more time consuming than for newer build - ings. The staff hopes repairs will be complete early this week. The UGLi lounge will be open during regular library hours and the vending machines will be operable for approximately 10 hours each day. A student monitor will guard the area, ensuring that food and drink remain in the lounge. IBM Emulation on Atari ST and Amiga (Continued from Page 1) Ashe. According to Cather, the new chemistry building is being erected primarily because quality facilities are important for attracting top scientists to the University. "We've had limitations in lab facilities and we've been underfunded over the years, which caused us to fall behind in teaching undergraduates," Cather said. The ultimate problem facing both departments over the years has been underfunding. The University, during the recession of the late 1970s and early 1980s, targeted the natural sciences for heavy budget cuts at a time when the disciplines needed funds to renovate and modernize laboratories facilities. and The recessionary cutbacks forced the departments to lay off more of their already depleted faculty. Said Cather, "We need more people in the departments - Chemistry in particular - because our faculty does a lot of teaching. We need to hire more faculty." Last year, to help alleviate this problem, the University granted both the Chemistry and Physics departments $500,000 - over their normal budgets - to hire new faculty, improve support services, agencies to fund research projects," said Jones. Charles Vest, dean of the University's College of Engin- eering, called the proposal, named the "Michigan Technology Infor- mation Network," a "great example of schools working together in a cost-effective way." He said he hopes the system will be in place within a year after funding begins. Funding would begin October 1 of this year if the plan is approved. Future funding would also come from private industry and tuition and fees required to use the system, Vest said. University officials were sur- prised that Blanchard will request the program this year because, as Vest said, it all "came about very quickly." Gast made hisrequest to the universities in late November.
