4 Page 14 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 16, 1987 M' not expecting day off vs. Ferris By DARREN JASEY Since Michigan wasn't emotional for last weekend's sweep by Illinois-Chicago, head coach Red Berenson hates to think about the hockey team's spirits going into this weekend's series at Ferris State. "Last weekend was a must weekend because of where we wanted to be," Berenson said. This weekend is a must weekend because of where we don't want to be." That is last place. The Wolverines had every reason to be at the peak of their game against UIC. The series was at home, and, more importantly, two wins would have put the Wolverines within striking distance of fourth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. In addition, Wolverines were smarting after the Flames rubbed their noses in the stench of 5-2, 13- 3 losses at the UIC Pavilion last Halloween. BUT THEY came up flat, losing 7-4 and 7-2. Ferris State (11-17, 7-15 in the CCHA) and Michigan (8-18, 7-15) are only two points above last place Miami. Given the -stakes, both coaches expect a battle. However, they don't expect the kind of battling that occurred the last game Our three-year and two-year scholarships won't make college easier. Just easier to pay for. The game didn't go into overtime, but the players' fists did. "It was one of those things that just happened," Ferris State's rookie head coach John Perpich said of the bench-clearing brawl. "It was unfortunate and I know Red wishes it wouldn't have happened. "We're two teams desperately trying to improve our positions, but we really don't need that kind of thing to happen." WHILE Michigan floundered last weekend, the Bulldogs moved out of last place by splitting with Lake Superior State. Ferris State has won three of its last four contests. Perpich credits the recent productivity of his second and third lines for.the Bulldog's recent success. "We're getting a little more consistency from our other forwards," Perpich said. "This has taken the burden away from our top line." Ferris State's top line includes none other than the Lowden twins-Peter and Paul. Around Big Rapids the names Peter and Paul have become as famous as the names Tony and Phil Esposito once were in the National Hockey League. "They have the ability to put the puck in the net consistently," said Perpich. "They have a knack for finding one another." Peter Lowden leads the Bulldogs with 21 goals and 44 points, while his brother's 31 points rank third on the team. SANDWICHED between the Lowdens is Rod Schluter with 35 points. The Bulldogs' MVP his freshman season, Schluter has returned to form after sitting out most of last season with a leg injury. The Bulldogs' new found fire- power is the last thing that the Wolverines need. Michigan has surrendered 36 goals in its last five games. Not surprisingly, Berenson has his team thinking defense for the upcoming games. "Sometimes we don't play with safety in mind," the Michigan coach said. "It's like driving a car. If you drive offensively then you'll probably get into an accident, whereas if you drive defensively then you won't." As for the possibilities of a Michigan sweep Berenson doesn't even want to think about it yet. "Michigan never talks sweep until they win the first game," Berenson said. "We went into last weekend looking for a sweep and..." 4 ... and let's not talk about last weekend anymore. SPOR TS OF THE DAILY; osU tumblers vault into Crisler tonight BY JULIE HOLLMAN They are geared up and ready to tumble head first into battle with one of Michigan's toughest rivals. And the men's and women's gymnastics teams will have no reason to hold back: they will be the underdogs at Crisler Arena tomorrow night at 8:00 against the Ohio State Buckeyes. For both the mens' and womens' teams, the Buckeyes would make a worthy feast since they are perched on the upper rungs of the Big Ten. Both teams realize, however, against OSU they may be biting off more than they can chew. "OHIO STATE has a nat- ionally contending team and they will be hard to beat," said junior Mitch Rose, the men's captain. "They always turn in consistent performances and produce 9.0 averages in all the events." Women's coach Dana Kempthorne also expressed concern about Ohio State's consistency and strength. She noted that the Buckeyes do ngt have a weak event, and in their last meet they scored a 181, eight points better than Michigan's showing (173) last week against Western Missouri. Kempthorne, who has set a goal of 178 to 180 points against the Buckeyes, stressed that the key to a competitive effort will be execution."We have to eliminate misses since last week we were hurt by falls," she said.. The Michigan women's team is young and boasts only five competing returnees. Seven freshmen also contribute and Kempthome feels they need more experience before they become comfortable with the Big Ten conference. The Wolverines main punch will come from Angela Williams, Heidi Cohen, and Janne Kleptek. The men's team will also look to their veterans when they attempt to break 270. Like the women's squad, the men will concentrate on hitting routines and turning in a solid team performance.
