Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, December 10, 1986 Michigan knocks off Kent St., 73-61 By RICK KAPLAN The big MAC attack was not supposed to give the Michigan basketball team much trouble. But the Wolverines struggled for the second straight night with a Mid- American Conference team yesterday, edging the Kent State Golden Flashes 73-61. After shooting 45 percent from the floor in a 62-59 loss to Western Michigan Monday night, the Wolverines rebounded to sink 55 percent against Kent State. Sophomore forward Glen Rice led Michigan with 26 points on 12- for-16 shooting, after hitting just 1-. of-10 attempts the previous night. A 21-FOOT, three-point shot by Kent State guard Bill Toole (25 points) two minutes into the second half tied the score at 38. After an exchange of baskets, Michigan (5- 2) went on a 9-2 run. The Flashes (3-2) came within two only once more. "This is a game that could have gone the other way," said Michigan coach Bill Frieder. "I think our kids did a good job hanging in there, staying in control, and making the big plays when they had to." The biggest play occurred with 3:47 left in the second half. Wolverine swingman Mike Griffin inbounded the ball to Gary Grant at midcourt. The 6-3 guard drove directly towards the basket, raced past Kent State center Terry Wearsch, and slammed the ball home while Wearsch fouled him. "When I got the ball, I saw the lane was open," Grant said. "The only guy who could stop me was the big fella. I just said, 'Well, I'm at least going to get a foul out of it.' Then I just dunked it." GRANT couldn't finish the three-point play, but his rush finished the Flashes. The hoop gave Michigan a 61-54 lead, and not even the National Guard could have forced any protest from Kent State the rest of the way. Michigan's full-court press and half-court trap dazzled the Flashes. Kent State committed 21 turnovers. Toole and forward Bobby Meeks GRADUATE NURSES Your education will not end with graduation. "We were in the ball game until under the ten-minute mark," said Kent State coach Jim McDonald. "Then we had a couple of bad turnovers, some of them unforced. That was very discouraging." Another discouraging sign for the Flashes was the strong play of Rice. In addition to his revitalized shooting touch, the 6-7 sophomore dominated the boards, contributing 12 rebounds, six on the offensive glass. "Rice has got to become an inside factor," Frieder said. "He's all we've got up there, really." Wolverine guards Grant (19 points), Antoine Joubert (14), and Garde Thompson (7) tried a different offensive strategy, looking inside more, with mixed results. "Teams are now starting to come out on us and are denying the perimeter game," Frieder said. "We've got to work harder to get inside baskets. We're trying to slip guards in there, but there getting it jammed down their throat." Throats were parched on the Kent State bench when the Wolverines jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. Toole helped the Flashes get back in the game before halftime, sparking a 12-2 spurt. The senior guard scored 16 points from long range in the first 20 minutes. Michigan held a 34-31 lead at the half.
