The title of the concert "reflects how society has built up the image of how women are supposed to be. As well as our own illusions of women," she said. "If you look at the concert you see a number of issues. Heidi's is a - bout a cloister of nuns, Rebecca's is looking at the opposing forces in women, and mine is about a (wo - man) poet. o Bell "The works are very personal ef - forts and you can see a lot of each PACKAGE DROP SHOP 617 E. "Sylvia Plath was a mo - ther as well as an artist. I'm a mo - ther too, and I like to think of my - self as an artist," she said. Heidi Durning's choreography is a reflection of her own dual nature. She meshes Classical Japanese dance with a western orientation to - wards modern dance. Durning's fa - ther is from Switzerland while her mother is Japanese. Durning is married to an American who worked on the set design for the dance, 'Utamaro's Dreams.' Rebecca Weitz is also using Classical Japanese in her chore - ography. Weitz spent the past sum - mer in Kyoto, Japan and is using video to complement her work 'Kuroi Kami' which translates to 'black hair.' "It's very different from the type of dance most west - erners are exposed to," said Weitz. "It's not outwardly energetic or ex - pressionistic, but is expressed on a more intense internal level, if the emotion is there it can have an impact on the audience that is very powerful. Maybe even more so than typical western style dance," she said. Ariel: Heart of a Poet, is the name of a volume of poetry pu - blished in 1965, and is the inspi - ration for the dance Fehrenbach has composed. It uses the sharp often violent imagery of the American poet Sylvia Plath to explore the issues of the ambiguity of being a woman. "We're looking at various as - pects of women but we're not really looking or commenting on current political issues," said Fehrenbach. "We're looking at more timeless is - sues dealing with the strengths and weaknesses of women," she said. 'Ryujyuo by the Waterfall' is a solo composed by Durning which is based on a wood block print by Suzuki Harunobu. The title, which translates into 'Dragon woman by the Waterfall,' is based on a legend. It involves a priest who when an - gered by the actions of his empress expresses his anger by ordering the rains to stop falling. The empress then climbs to his mountaintop 4 Rebecca Weitz, Mary Fehrenbach, and Heidi Durning will perform their Master's thesises dance presentations 'Illusions of Her,' this weekend at the School of Dance Building. f. t.. Natives of the area who do not recognize the em - press mistake her for a dragon spirit and thus the title of the print. Durning will dance this with Tho - mas Cocco. 'Utamaro's Dreams' is based on a series of 18th century wood block prints depicting various beautiful women. They include courtesans, other "care free women," mothers and Abalone (shell) div.ers. These various women make up the focus of the dance. "The beauty of the women is subtle to the point that it finds its expression in the beauty of the neckline," said Durning. 'Tendrils Entwined' is the final dance of the evening and is Weitz's large group piece. This piece really focuses on the dual nature of wo - men. As an example Weitz talked about the Indian goddess Kali who is described as being both a bene - volent and violent creature. "This was considered to be okay," said Weitz. She was supposed to have many sides." Six characters with different aspects of the self will be in the dance and you will be able to distinguish them by the colors they will wear. Their props are something for the audience to watch. White bas- kets will be used and the dancers will be seen sowing seeds. The way their arms and bodies are used will be a vital clue on how this character should be interpreted, said Weitz. So if you're sitting around Friday or Saturday night this week - end, and you're looking for a little distraction from the study grind, this concert is recommended. Illusions of Her will be per - formed Friday and Saturday nights December 12 and 13 at the Mac intosh Theatre of the School of Music on North Campus.
