ARTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, December 10, 1986 Page 7 Stevie set to rock the Hill By Brian Jarvinen After a long fall season of blues shows, which has included performances by Lonnie Mack and Johnny Copeland in addition to the great Blues Festival featuring John Lee Hooker, the term is coming to a close with another superb guitarist when Stevie Ray Vaughn comes to Hill Auditorium tomorrow night. No stranger to the Detroit / Ann Arbor area, Thursday's show will be Vaughn's fourth appear - ance here in a year and a half, including a show last year at Hill Auditorium. Last February, Vaughn and his band Double Trouble managed to sell twenty thousand tickets to six shows at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Ann Arbor's tradition of sup - porting the blues, combined with Vaughn's strong local attraction should make for a receptive crowd. Stevie Ray Vaughn was inspired to travel his road to stardom by his famous brother, Jimmy Lee Vaughn of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The younger Vaughn went in and out of bands in Austin, Texas, before forming Double Trouble with bass player Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton. Several rock stars began to notice him, w-Classic guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble will jam at Hill Auditorium on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. C LAJJIIIFIIIIIIL Al" n _, Continued From Previous Page TICKETS 17 DAYSVS. $ AL. $299 Double at Pasadena's ouly hotel on pa- rade route, historic Crown Hotel. SITUATIONS WANTED including David Bowie, which led to Vaughn playing on Bowie's Serious Moonlight album, which in turn helped get him an Epic recording contract. The result was Double Trouble's 1983 debut album Texas Flood, which featured the blues-meets- rockabilly tune "Love Struck Baby," as well as plenty of standard Texas blues-type stuff. After this, Vaughn hit the road with a vengeance as an opening act for various groups, including The Moody Blues, for whom he opened a show at Crisler Arena a few years ago. Eventually he began headlining his own shows, and he has pretty much been on the road ever since. In 1984 Vaughn released his second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, which included more distinct classics, including the title track and a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)." This led to more touring, until 1985 when he released Soul to Soul. This record was more of a cross Considering A bortion?
