With eight days left before the season opener at Notre Dame, Schembechler is concerned about naming his starting lineups, especially on defense. "THE PROBLEM is, I can't give you' the starting lineup because I don't know," the Michigan boss said yesterday at his first press luncheon of the season. Four spots on defense "could go either way," according to Schembechler. Three of the four openings are at linebacker. Steve Thibert and Carlitos Bostic along with Dieter Heren and Tim Schulte all want to start at outside linebacker. Thibert and Heren are listed as starters, but Bostic and Schulte may still get the nod next week. IT'S THE same story at inside linebacker with ' Andree McIntyre, the listed starter, and Todd Schulte, the challenger. Defensive signal caller Andy Moeller is the only sure starting linebacker. Brad Cochran's old cornerback position features a battle between Erik Campbell and Dave Arnold. Injuries hampered both players this week (Campbell's ankle and Arnold's head), but they are expected to play against Notre Dame. "They are all so close, that they all ought to play,".Schembechler said. BUT DEFENSE isn't the only area of concern for the 18-year coach. The placekickers' war is hotter than ever between Pat Moons, the listed starter, Mike Gillette, last year's starter, and Rick Sutkiewicz, the kickoff. specialist. "I just don't know who will be doing the field goals and extra points," Schembechler said. "They're all pretty close." Schembechler had no trouble naming the starters on the ..AIL can ill afford another injury u front."'' THEN THERE is Schembechler's usual area of concern - tight end. Sophomore Derrick Walker, who is listed asr a linebacker, is now the backup' behind sophomore Jeff Brown.-', Keith Mitchell, who looked.- comfortable there in the spring' game, is third in line. The tight end situation has' . been bothering Schembechle'r.-, since he lost All-American Erio"c Kattus. Because of th6 weaknesses there, Schembechlerr admitted the offense may turn tha three-widout format more often since he has several talentedri receivers in the likes of Paul", Jokisch, John Kolesar, and, freshman Greg McMurtry. Notre Dame, obviously, fi another one of Schembechler concerns. The coaching change"x at the school confuses Michigan's pre-game strategy because th'e staff cannot predict how head, coach Lou Holtz will adapt his philosophies to his personnel. Preparing for the Irish defense is the main difficulty. The Michigan braintrusts do not know if Holtz will use the setup he- had at. Minnesota or if he will use defensive coordinator - Foge Fazio's plans from Pittsburgh, where he was head coach for four,,, years. "We really don't know what-,. Holtz will do," Schembechle r said. "He didn't bring his staff...' from Minnesota, he brought in A lot of different people." Despite Michigan's high ratings, there are still areas of concern. But nobody is worrying. Daily Photo by DAN HABIB Despite a few concerns, Bo Schembechler has reason to smile. All signs point to another successful season for the highly-ranked Wolverines. Moeller ... sure starter - offensive line, but that's where he has the most concern after.two linemen suffered injuries this week. TACKLE JERRY Quaerna went down with a knee injury and is out for at least two weeks and backup guard Dave Herrick suffered a hernia and is out for the year. Mike Husar, who started six games last year, will take- over Quaerna's spot. He sat out the other six games with a knee injury, but is 100 percent now. "(The offensive line) is not ready," Schembechler said. "We ' e s Trustees probe SC hoops team Sthe .tailback tirne with Jamie Morris. """"c %"'Is tpe. a" i" he h n COLUMBIA, S.C.
