I, The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 5, 1986 - Page. 17 Records '*% rvt;s ,. h Leaving Trains--Kill Tunes (SST) Leaving Trains do what needs to be done: they write solid songs, play their instruments well, and always manage to keep things together. This isn't all that uncommon, right? However, this band is unique in that they do more than that which is needed when supplying spirit. Leaving Trains are a real, honest-to-God rock and roll band. Playing with loads of gut-filled,.honest aban - don they make every track on Kill Tunes sound fresh and true. Both sides of Kill Tunes offer the same formula of rip-roaring, bluesy rock and roll. The energy level is full steam ahead, which about halfway through makes one wonder if the Trains are limited players. Thankfully the band slows down (while retaining the feeling) on the last cuts of each album side, proving their musical range. And by then the band is definitely ready for a change of pace. Not one of the tracks on Kill Tunes are weak, but some are more memorable than others, especially their crazed version of The Saints' "Private Affair." It's a bitter commentary on the state of the same old same old (who said there's no such thing as an original song?) and the Trains (ironically) do it honor. Also noteworthy is "A Drunker Version of You," complete with crashing glasses (Last night was a smash success, let's g e t smashed successfully), and their killer homage to our rock and roll forefathers, "10 Generations" (we're the same has-beens we love to hate). Just what the world needs, another rock and roll band? Well, Leaving Trains say if you're gonna do it, do it right. -Beth Fertig Adefense against cancer can be cooked up in yourkitchen.
