Women's Basketball vs. Wayne State Thursday, 7:30 Crisler Arena SPORTS Men's Basketball vs. Western Michigan Tonight, 7:30 Crisler Arena Page 8 The Michigan Daily Monday, December 8, 1986 Rainbows bow to Bo i By PHIL NUSSEL With wire reports HONOLULU - Hawaiians know a lot about early- December sneak attacks, so they tried one of their own Saturday night on Michigan in the first-ever meeting between the Rainbow Warriors and the Wolverines. But the element of surprise was not enough as fourth-ranked Michigan (11-1) held off the hyped-up Hawaii squad 27-10. "We knew we were in for a tough, close game," said head coach Bo Schembechler. "Hawaii is a good team and they are even better playing on the island." BOB PERRYMAN, who finished with 107 yards on 14 carries, broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns. His 55-yard gallop, the longest for any Michigan runner this year, gave the Wolverines a comfortable 24-10 lead with 9:38 left. Jamie Morris had another big day with 21 carries for 118 yards. Quarterback Jim Harbaugh, after finishing third in the Heisman Trophy balloting to Miami's Vinny Testaverde Saturday afternoon, hit nine-of-15 aerials for 125 yards and scored the team's first the field goal after Colin Scott sacked Harbaugh. THE WARRIORS (7-5) tied the game 3-3 when Rod Valverde kicked a 25-yard field goal with 13:30 left in the half. The kick capped an 11-play, 66-yard drive that included a 26-yard pass from Gregg Tipton to Dyas. Michigan continued its reputation for third-quarter rallies by scoring on its first drive of the second half when Harbaugh dove into the endzone from four yards out. Minutes later, though, Hawaii tied the game at 10 with a one-yard plunge by Coyle Permetter after a 14- play, 86-yard drive. Perryman put the Wolverines ahead for good with a 2-yard flight into the Rainbow endzone with 14:17 left. Five minutes later, Perryman went on his 55-yard scamper to put his team ahead by 14 points. Gillette finished the scoring with a 27-yard field goal. Tipton finished as Hawaii's offensive leader, hitting 21-of-33 passes for 207 yards. Blue Banter " Morris went over the 1000-yard rushing mark for the second year in a row. He now has 1039 yards on 196 attempts with five touchdowns. " Monte Robbins' 82-yard punt in the fourth quarter was the longest boot in Michigan history. He is enjoying the best year of his career with a 44.1-yard average per punt. touchdown early in the third quarter. Michigan opened the scoring with a 40-yard goal by Mike Gillette on the Wolverines' possession. It came at the 8:40 mark of the field first first quarter. The score, Gillette's tenth three-pointer of the year, was set up by a fumble by Hawaii receiver David Dyas, which Tony Gant recovered at the Rainbow 48. The Wolverines worked the ball to the 10, but had to take Associated Press Wolverine Bob Perryman rushed for 107 yards in Michigan's victory, including a 55-yard touchdown that put the Wolverines up 24-10.
