Hawaii

End of Rainbows tough for'M'

By PHIL NUSSEL
HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hawaii is-.going to get a
little bluer this weekend as the Rose Bowl-bound
Wolverines (10-1) travel to the islands for the final
regular season game of '86 against Western Athletic
Conference power Hawaii (7-4).
Michigan was expected. to arrive in Honolulu this
morning at about 1 a.m. EDT, 8 p.m. Hawaii time.
And what does a Bo Schembechler team do after a
dozen hours on a plane?
Of course, they practice. An hour-long workout is
scheduled upon arrival. The team will barely see the
island paradise until after the game Saturday night
(kickoff is 8 p.m. EDT and will be televised on
ESPN).
"It's gonna be football and not messing around,"
General Schembechler said before leaving Ann Arbor's
winter wonderland, "but they will get to see Hawaii. I
think it will be a great educational experience for our
guys.
THE RAINBOW Warriors will be out to educate
the Wolverines about upsets on the island, which were
made famous when tiny Chaminade College upset No.
1-ranked Virginia in basketball four years ago.
The Warriors command a 6-1 mark over their
opponents at home this year. Wisconsin, UTEP,
Fresno State, and Wyoming were the top wins. The
lone loss was to Brigham Young, 10-3.
"I told Bo Schembechler anybody who goes out to
Hawaii is in for a tough game," said Michigan
basketball coach Bill Frieder, who played a game out
there a year ago. "I've been to Hawaii. They're going
to have their officials, their scorekeeper, their timer,
the works. They're going to have a tough game."

Head coach Dick Tomey, a grad assistant under
Schembechler at Miami (Ohio), is in his tenth season
at Hawaii. He has only had two losing seasons and
boasts a 63-45-3 career mark.
"Michigan is a great challenge and we're looking
forward to playing them," Tomey said. "This will be
the first team we've faced out here that can run and
throw well and play good defense."
THE RAINBOW defense is led by Samoan Sack
Man, Al Noga, who became a first-team All-American
yesterday. Noga has a team-record 17 sacks this year.
He leads the team with 81 tackles -29 for losses.
Hawaii's offense averages almost three touchdowns
a game. Quarterback Gregg Tipton has 190
completions in 344 attempts for 2438 yards and 11
touchdowns. He gets plenty of protection from 6-7,
329-pound tackle Mark Nua along with a host of other
meatwagons averaging 280 pounds.
Danny Crowell leads the rushing attack with 163
carries for 675 yards, and six touchdowns. Marco
Johnson, a 5-9, 165-pound junior, heads the receiving
corps with 37 catches for 515 yards.
"They play like two different teams," said Michigan
defensive coordinator Gary Moeller. "They are
something else at home. They play with a lot of
emotion. But they don't play nearly as well on the
road. They play much better in their own
environment."
And what an environment it is. According to a
source in the Hawaii athletic department, it is sunny
and 80 degrees in Honolulu. UH is having a surfing
contest this weekend. With a home environment like
that, who wouldn't play well?

Quarterback Jim Harbaugh calls out the signals in the Rose-Bowl clinching victory over Ohio State. The
Wolverines cross the continent to play a competitive Hawaii squad tomorrow in preparation for their Jan. 1
date with Arizona State in Pasadena.
