scalps Chippewas,

By JEFF RUSH
Michigan beat back the CMU
Chippewas last night, 76-56, in a
two-act play at Crisler Arena.
In the first act, tension mounted
as the teams traded leads 15 times,
neither able to take control.
Michigan went into the
intermission with a tenuous four-
point lead, 35-31.
The second act was anti-
climactic as the Wolverines' match-
up zone defense completely shut
down the Chippewas. Leading man
Dan Majerle scored no points in the
second half, and finished with just
eight.
"When we finally got ahead of
them, they just fell apart," said
senior Garde Thompson, who put
in a career-high 19 points.
JUNIOR Gary Grant led all
scorers with 21 points while senior
Antoine Joubert added 14.
Michigan coach Bill Frieder
criticized his club's first-half
performance, but had nothing but
plaudits for the second.
"I felt in the first half they out-
scrapped us on the boards," said
Frieder. "In the second half I felt
our guys played hard and established
control early."
The Chippewas managed only
nine points through the midway
point of the second half as
Michigan opened up a 52-37 lead.
"As a coach I've never been quite

so frustrated," said CMU coach
Charlie Coles. "I wasn't doing a
good job of going against
(Frieder's) matchup.
"I told him after the game I've
never had a defense do that to a
team of mine."
Coles blamed himself for the
loss, pointing out several coaching
lapses on his part and his inability
to, adjust to the surprising play of
Thompson.
"We came in here wanting to
guard first, Grant; second, Rice;
third, Joubert; and then Garde
Thompson," said Coles. "Well,
hey, what did he get? Seventeen?
Nineteen?
"We knew Grant and Rice were
going to be good, and we knew
Joubert was going to take his
shots."
But CMU held Grant and Rice to
subpar performances. Though
Grant's 21 points led the team, he
was averaging 30 before the
contest. Rice fouled out after
scoring only eight points.
THOMPSON found CMU's
fatal weakness, hitting .7-of-1 1
shots from the field. When he
wasn't attempting a three-pointer,
he was faking it and then driving in
for an easy two.

"My shot just felt comfortable,"
said Thompson. "My knee felt
better than Monday, and Monday I
wasn't confident. Tonight I felt
confident."
"I think Garde has great
confidence, and I look for Garde to
have a great year," said Coles.
"He's a wiry guy and a crazy so-
and-so... but he's going to make
things happen."
BOTH the teams and their fans
jostled to gain the upper hand in an
emotional first half.
On the floor the play was rough
as a few elbows flew. Thompson
found himself on the receiving end
of several painful CMU fouls.

76-56
The Chippewas looked as if
they might break away when a
Daryl Miller layup after sloppy
play at both ends put CMU up 23-
20. Then a twisting and twirling
layup by Grant put an end to any
thoughts of a CMU rally.
The substitution of Jack Kramer
at the 11:39 mark and Michigan's
switch from a man-to-man to a
zone defense helped the Wolverines
control the rest of the half.
Michigan capped its first-half
scoring when, after Tommie
Johnson missed a breakaway dunk,
Mark Hughes slammed the ball at
the other end. A Johnson jumper
ended the scoring at 35-31.

Tip of the Kap
By Rick Kaplan
He is the other freshman.
He is the one who plays.
Jack Kramer, Michigan's 6-3 guard, passed the
NCAA's minimum academic requirements for
freshman eligibility. He is contributing on a team
that has won the Big Ten championship the last two
years. But two other freshmen grab all the headlines.
Terry Mills and Rumeal Robinson, two of the
nation's top five high school basketball last year, are
both first-year students at the University. Both failed
to meet the Scholastic Aptitude Test scores needed to
play as freshmen. Both watched the last night's 76-56
win over Central Michigan from a center-court seat at
Crisler Arena.
Without Robinson making his expected immediate,
impact in the Wolverine backcourt, Kramer has
become the first guard off coach Bill Frieder's bench.
Last night he scored a career-high four points.
Okay, so he's not ready to be enshrined in the
Basketball Hall of Fame, but he knows his role, and
he's playing it.
"Kramer's doing a nice job," Frieder said. "He
doesn't look to score, so our offense runs a little
better. We need people out there who aren't worried
about scoring.
"He's a competitor. He's a better player than I
thought he was. He did a hell of a job tonight."
Kramer's competitive style helped Michigan in the
-game-winning stretch in the first half. With 8:21 left,
Kramer entered the contest with Michigan trailing 25-
22.
Seconds later, he came flying over a bevy of big
men under the Wolverines' offensive boards and
talmost grabbed a rebound. The ball slipped from his
hands out of bounds, but the effort did not go
unnoticed by the usually comatose Michigan crowd.

Freshman Jack Kramer...
...the recruit who plays
He was given one of the loudest ovations of the
evening.
The play sparked his teammates, who immediately
went on a 13-6 spurt to take a 35-31 lead at the half.
"It's hard coming in cold off the bench," Kramer
said. "I'm just trying to run up and down the floor a
few times until I get the blood flowing and get a
sweat going.
"It's kind of my job to come in and play hard.
That gives the players who were on the floor a little
burst of energy. If they see you hustling, they might
start getting their second wind."
Kramer blew in to Ann Arbor with all the
publicity accorded Lyndon LaRouche's candidacy for
president. Mills and Robinson gave Michigan one of
the country's top freshman classes. Kramer was, and
still is, the anonymous third recruit.
Now, he is beginning to make himself known. In
addition to the spectacular rebound attempt, the
Quincy, Ill. native sank a crowd-pleasing reverse
layup in the second half.
Reversing his freshman jitters doesn't appear to be
a problem, either. "It's hard being a freshman,
coming in with all the new surroundings, and getting
adjusted to the coaches and the program," he said.
"I'm getting better adjusted every day."
Kramer must adjust to being the last remaining
remnant of Frieder's dream class.
"I feel for Rumeal and Terry," Kramer said. "It's
got to be very hard for them to sit and watch the other
players. I have a good relationship with them. They
like to give me tips when they watch us play.
"I'm not trying to play for "them, but on the other
hand, right now, I'm their closest link."
Kramer may link up with Mills and Robinson and
earn louder ovations a few years down the line.
