For students it's time to get ready for finals and put away the summer clothes until June. But for the Michigan basketball team, it's time to play teams nobody knows about, and, for that matter, nobody cares. Last year, such notables as Florida Southern, Youngstown State, and Chicago State invaded Crisler Arena. Replacing them this year are Bowling Green, Illinois- Chicago, and Ball State. At 7:30 p.m. tonight, the seven- game, pre-Big Ten home schedule tips off as the Ball State Cardinals come to town. UNLIKE THE last two years, however, these games won't be easy victories. Ball State (1-0) could pose a threat to Bill Frieder's Wolverine squad (1-1). Forget that Michigan is young and inexperienced. Ball State is a good basketball team that is coming off one of its most successful seasons. Last year's team (21-10 overall last year, 11-7 in the Mid-American Conference) received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning the MAC post-season tournament. The Cardinals soon learned what playing a top-notch opponent is like as they were quickly eliminated from the NCAA tourney by Memphis State, 95-63. But Ball State, just like Michigan, will have a different look this year. LOST TO graduation are forward Dan Palombizio, the conference's third-leading scorer of a year ago, (20.2 points per game) and one of the MAC's best backcourt tandems - Larry Reed (12.7 ppg, 4.5 assists per game) and Chris Shelton (13.9, 5.5). Palombizio also grabbed better than 10 rebounds per game. It will be a busy night at the scorers' table as Frieder and Brown will shuffle players in and out looking for the right combinations. "We have a lot of new faces," said Ball State head coach Al Brown. "Seventy percent of our scoring and rebounding has left, so we're going to have a lot of players on the floor who haven't seen much action." TWO PLAYERS sure to see action are junior Derrick Wesley (11.3 ppg) and junior center Steve Dziatczak (3.4 ppg). Wesley, a 6-3 guard, is the only starter returning from last season,. and Ball State's only proven scorer. Dziatczak, a 6-9, 215-pound bruiser, was inserted into the starting lineup late in the season last year, and the Cardinals promptly strung together seven straight victories en route to the NCAA tournament. Brown hopes to help make up for the loss of the three graduated seniors with his fine freshman class, which includes Rick Bettenhausen, Rodney Haynes, and Scott Nichols. Bettenhausen is a 7-0 245- pound center who adds muscle to the Cardinals' front line. IF HISTORY repeats itself, college basketball should agree with Haynes. The 6-1 guard comes to. Ball State as New Castle High's. (Indiana) third-leading career scorer behind Steve Alford and Kent, Benson. FIESTA & ROSE BOWL .
