He then lighted his own stogie, kicked back, and enjoyed himself. The occasion? Michigan earned a berth in the nation's most prestigious Bowl game by beating the Buckeyes. Schembechler cele - brated this new berth, despite its different spelling, by distributing cigars. THE WOLVERINES have the week off for Thanksgiving before resuming preparation Sunday for a game against Hawaii on Dec. 6. As of yesterday, Schembechler said, he did not know much about the Rainbow Warriors. "All I know about Hawaii is they're a very good defensive team and it's very hard to win out there," he said. "It's easier to beat them on the mainland." Hawaii, 6-4, but 5-1 at home, beat Wisconsin, 20-17, earlier in the season. Schembechler said he has seen only the Wisconsin- Hawaii film but added that Michigan will scout this Saturday's Hawaii-Wyoming game. SCHEMBECHLER said he will try to use the Hawaii game to prepare for Michigan's Jan. 1 matchup with Arizona State, but stressed the value of the game for Morris ... earns Bo's praise the players. "It will be a great educational experience for our guys," he said. "It's a great opportunity to go and see (Hawaii). It's gonna be football and not messing around, but they'll get a chance to see Hawaii." Schembechler's win over Ohio State broke Fielding "Hurry Up" Yost's all-time record for career victories at Michigan and extended his career mark to 206-56-7. Beating Ohio State is one of Schembechler's most gratifying accomplishments. "Anytime you're playing this classic and you're getting blown out 14-3," he said, "and you keep pace and come back to win it, it has to be one of the great wins over Ohio State. "The only way to go in the (Big Ten) is to come down to Michigan- Ohio State. Anytime you play this game there are so many things hanging in the balance. I just hope it stays like that." Blue Banter -Schembechler feels tailback Jamie Morris, who ran for 210 yards on 29 carries against Ohio State, can compete with his brother Joe Morris of the New York Giants. "There ain't nobody tougher than Jamie," said Schembechler. "I promise you that. Don't tell me (Joe Morris) is tougher than Jamie; he ain't no tougher. Jamie's a tough little nut." -Schembechler discounted the hype surrounding quarterback Jim Harbaugh's "guarantee" of victory over Ohio State. "After you've just lost to Minnesota, what the hell do you care what he says. If your only problem is worrying about what your quarterback says, you don't have anything to worry about." -Strong tacklefJohn Elliott and cornerback Garland Rivers were named Saturday to the 1986 Kodak All-America Team. Twenty Wolverines made UPI's All-Big Ten team. Elliott, Rivers, Morris, Harbaugh, Mark Hammerstein, and Andy Moeller were First Team UPI selections. MSU1t By ERIC MAXSON The Michigan wrestling team trekked to Dayton, Ohio, this weekend for the Ohio Open and looked promising as it came away with a strong second. Michigan State won the meet with 117.25 points. The Wolverines finished with 82.5 points, while Ohio State took third with 68.5. Michigan coach Dale Bahr was "pretty happy" with his team's effort. Considering the squad's youth, he said, its performance was "not too bad." Eight out of ten of Michigan's starters are freshmen or sophomores. LEADING THE way for the Wolverines was 158-pounder Joe Pantaleo, who downed Indiana's Scott Duncan 4-2 in the final match. Sophomore Doug Wyland took second in his weight class, losing 11-5 to Cleveland State's Paul Kapper in the 118-pound final. Others finishing in the top six were Dave Dameron, sixth at 126 pounds, John Fisher, third at 134, Jerry Norris, sixth at 134, and James Dye, sixth at 167. The only disappointment for ps'M' in Ohio Youngsters lead Michigan wrestlers to second place will be back for the "important part of the season." ALSO INJURED was Dameron, who hurt his chest, and chose to default his final match to avoid further aggravation. The injury is apparently a pulled muscle, and Dameron should be back by next weekend's meet at eighth-ranked Clarion State. Overall, however, Bahr was pleased with the results of the meet. He said the young Wolverines are shaping up as he hoped. "Things are starting to fall into place. The people I assumed to come to the forefront in their weight classes are. And he expects continued improvement. "By the end of the season, we'll be better than Michigan State," he said. "Our young wrestlers are very talented, but sometimes they'll get beaten by an older wrestler. Time will tell." Fisher, who missed all of last year with a separated shoulder, strained a ligament in his knee, and will be out at least a week. "We really depend on him to score points," Bahr said. "We'll have a hard time replacing him." Bahr stressed, however, that Fisher By WALTER KOPF Youth and inexperience have always been grouped together. TONIGHT, Michigan's spikers will take on cross-town rival Eastern Michigan University in their last non-conference match "It was the high point of the season, a very positive experience" said junior Heather Olsen of the weekend sweep. "I feel great about it, we're young, and we're going to be better next year." Michigan's lone senior is Jayne Hickman, and Olsen and Lisa Vahi are the only juniors. Even Joyce Davis is new to the scene in her first year as head coach. FOR MORE youth, the Wolverines need look no farther. than across the net. While the Hurons have played like seasoned veterens (8-8 in conference, 17-11 overall), they actually have only one returning player from last year's squad. According to EMU head coach Frank Fristensky, "We have a very young team, in fact at one time we had five freshmen starting." Despite the experience, tonight's game is expected to be a good one. "This matchup may become a tradition," said Fristensky. And looking at the ages of the teams, he may be right. Scherer takes All- America honors Chasing rainbows?
