Michigan, which lost twice last year against the in-state MSU, lost a non-conference regular season game for the first time since losing at Tennessee in 1984. The Tigers' 82-76 victory was heir 39th straight at home, and allows them to advance to the Coca-Cola National Invitation Tournament semifinals in New York this Friday. STARTING CENTER Marvin Alexander led the team with 21, giard Dwight Boyd had 18, guard Vincent Askew and sixth man Sylvester Gray each had 15. Michigan was led again by Gary Grant with 30 and Glen Rice with 21. Down 31-28 at halftime, Memphis State roared to a 20-point lead just past the halfway mark of the second half before settling for, the six-point victory against the Wolverines. Michigan looked as if it would take a six-point lead into the lockerroom at halftime, but a three- pointer at the buzzer by Boyd cut the Tiger deficit to three. MEMPHIS STATE came back after intermission to score the first four points and 10 of the first 12. The Tigers never gave up the lead the rest of the game. A physical game from the start, it looked much more like the style of basketball Bill Frieder's Wolverines have played the past few years than did Friday's 115-107 victory against Bradley. That seemed to help Michigan early as it went up by eight points in the first half. In the second half, however, a combination of a less tenacious Michigan defense, too many fouls, and the inability to find Rice on offense led to Michigan's downfall. Memphis State went up early in the first half, and led 8-5 after guard John Wilfong scored on a feed from forward Askew. But some rough play under the eyes of lenient referees seemed to put Michigan into a Big Ten frame of mind, and it dominated until just before the halftime buzzer. FRIEDER QUESTIONED a called charge on guard Grant, a non- call that appeared to be a charge by Askew, and a called pushing off on center Mark Hughes. After a break in the action, Hughes rebounded a miss by Alexander. Antoine Joubert fired up a short jumper, and goaltending on MSU forward Kenneth Moody resulted in a 9-8 Michigan lead. The Wolverines were able to go up 17-10 with the help of two jumpers by Rice, who scored 10 points in the first half to take up where he left off Saturday night. Michigan was able to extend its lead to eight at 27-19, but let up defensively in the final few minutes 1of the half. The Wolverines next will take on Ball State at Crisler Arena. 1. _- Blue Lines By DARREN JASEY Sunday night Michigan goaltender Warren Sharples entered foreign ground. For the first time, head coach Red Berenson thrusted im into the deadly realm of The Second Game - the game that has tormented and demoralized Michigan's other goaltender Glen Neary all season long. Michigan has not won The Second Game all year. Berenson tried to change that by inserting Sharples into The Second Game. against Western Michigan Sunday night at Yost Ice Arena. The logic was sound. Sharples and Neary ave alternated starts since the season began ith Sharples getting the nod in game one and Neary following up. Sharples backstopped the Wolverines to a 4-3 victory in the first game against the Broncos, raising his record to 4-3. Neary's record stood at 0-6. So Berenson stayed with the hot goalie. "You always look for the win," said Neary after Sunday's loss. "The team comes first and the coaches thought that Warren played well (in game one) and that it would carry over to the ext game. It's the coaches' decision. If I were the coach I would have done the same thing." Berenson said, "You want to give them experience and a chance to prove themselves, Sharples plays two... --- can't beat jinx but on the other hand we want to win some Illinois-Chicago.
