That's what Big Ten basketball used to be. This year the Big Ten will have a different look. Four new coaches, an emphasis on speed and quickness, and a probable new conference champion come March will make the Big Ten the conference in college basketball this year. And who knows? Maybe even a national champion will come out of the bunch. The major differences in the Big Ten- this year are the coaching changes. Iowa, Ohio State, Northwestern and Minnesota have new leaders. Together, Tom Davis, Gary Williams, Bill Foster and Clem Haskins have 55 years of college basketball experience and a composite 61.8 career winning percentage. All four stress pressing defense and fast break offense, a change from the physical, defense-oriented style that has characterized the conference in years past. "I do think the new coaches will make a difference," said Illinois coach Lou Henson. "The Big Ten is moving to an up-tempo league and the addition of the new coaches will only enhance that." The conference, which placed a record-tying six teams in the NCAA tournament and had another (Ohio State) win the NIT championship last season, returns 18 of last year's top 25 scorers, and In Chicago for Thanksgiving? Michigan, the Big Ten's conference champ the past two seasons, will most likely relinquish the crown to one of four teams that have national champion aspirations as well.. Indiana, Purdue, Iowa, and Illinois are ranked high in every pre-season poll, and according to Wolverine coach Bill Frieder, each squad resembles the last two Michigan teams. "They've really got the types of teams that we had the last couple of years," said Frieder. "It's nice to have veterans returning from successful campaigns and that's what Big Ten championship teams are made of." Indiana (21-8 overall, 13-5 in the Big Ten) is the favorite to capture the crown. Bob Knight's Hoosiers finished second last year, and return three starters including pre-season Big Ten Player of the Year Steve Alford. Alford is the league's leading returning scorer. He averaged 22.5 points a game last season. The New Castle, Indiana native also hit on 87 percent of his free throws. His numbers should be even better this year with the advent of the enticing, 19-foot-9 three-point shot. Also returning are forwards Ricky Calloway and Daryl Thomas. Calloway (13.9 ppg) was the conference's Rookie of the Year last season, while Thomas (14.5 ppg) is back in action after Knight suspended him two weeks ago for academic reasons. The season could depend, however, on how well Junior College Player of the Year Dean Garrett adjusts to Big Ten competition. Garrett averaged just under 20 points a game for San Francisco City College, and was voted the Big Ten pre-season Newcomer of the Year. Still, the Hoosiers lack depth. Junior forwards Steve Eyl and Todd Jadlow will be pressed into action for Knight, who is arguably the best coach in the country, not to mention the conference. Gene Keady's Purdue Boilermakers (22-10, 11-7) will seriously threaten Indiana. The fans in West Lafayette have reason to be excited as Keady returns his four top scorers from a year ago. Leading the Boilermakers is a 6- 4 shooting machine named Troy Lewis, who, like Alford, will benefit from the three-point shot. What was I supposed to say-we're going to lose? They outplayed us. "I speak for my team. It's not being cocky, it's just having confidence. If you don't believe in yourself, who will? It's just like you writers. If you don't believe you can write, who will?" Joubert blames any bad rap he Hoop-la! "I tell everybody we are going to have a different look this year. We're going to be small. But that might be overshadowed by our poor defense, lack of shooting and country club attitude." - Michigan basketball coach Bill Frieder at last week's Big Ten Media Conference "See what happens when you win two Big Ten Championships? You start giving all that bullshit." -Purdue coach Gene Keady's reaction to Frieder's quips at the same press conference "I kid George and tell him he has to do a little more than to help us look good in airports." - Michigan State coach Jud Heat hcote on seven-foot transfer center George Papadakos "Is there a chronic waste dump moving into Indiana that causes this illness each year about this time? I don't think I would comment on-that. For years I thought Indiana was a waste dump, but after we recruited Scott Skiles and Kirk Manns, I have to change my opinions." -- Heathcote explaining Bob Knight's absence from the press conference might have on those same writers, specifying those from in state: "When we go other places to play I get good write-ups," he said. "People tear you down on bad points and don't see the positive points," said Joubert. "It doesn't bother me. I come out to play. I love to play the game. "I don't read what (reporters) say before the game or after the game. All I want to do is beat the team. I'm concentrating more on college right now. After that we'll see what happens." What may happen is a professional basketball career. Joubert contends he could play in the NBA despite his lack of speed. "There are some guards in the league that aren't that quick." One wonders if he considers Magic Johnson one of those guards. "No names," said Joubert.
