Page 10 -The Michigan Daily- Friday, November 21, 1986 Wolverines By ADAM SCHEFTER Despite losing two games this past weekend to Michigan State, the Michigan Wolverines played some excellent hockey. One of the problems, however, was that they didn't play that "excellent" hockey long enough. This weekend, with 'the team facing Western Michigan Saturday at Kalamazoo and at home Sunday, they will be striving to play that "excellent" hockey for a full 60 minutes. "This weekend is going to be a matter of playing that extra few minutes," said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. "We cannot make those big mistakes. When the game is on the line, our team has made the bad play that has cost us dearly instead of the good play that forced the other team into a mistake." THOSE BAD plays have been the major reason for the Wolverines' slow start at 3-9. Excluding one game at Illinois- Chicago when the team had food poisoning, the game at Michigan State last Saturday was the only one that the Wolverines have been behind by more than one goal going into the third period. Many of Michigan's problems can be attributed to their youth and lack of experience. Steps are being made to correct the errors. "We prepare for every weekend by examining our other games," Berenson said. "We try to take the good and bad things from these other games and learn from them." IF THIS is true, than the Wolverines will be a better team this weekend when they face a squad that is similar to the Wolverine want team. The 6-6 Broncos (fifth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association) have a lot of freshmen on the team. Three are on defense and five are on the front line. And like the Wolverines, their freshman have done an admirable job. Center Paul Pollilo, a Brantford, Ontario native, has picked up much of the offensive slack this season scoring eight goals and passing for 17 assists. Freshman center Bill Armstrong has also stood out. His scoring streak of ten games ended last Friday against Lake Superior. During the streak, he had five goals and eight assists. Mike Posma (6- 15-21), yet another freshman, has stabilized the defense. Their supporting cast is strong. The Broncos rely on All-American defenseman Wayne Gagne (5-22- to waste Western 27). The senior captain is five goals short of breaking one of the two WMU defenseman scoring records he does not own, that being for goals in a career. The mark is 39 held by Al Hamernick (1974-77),, and Gagne has 35. He has moved up to fifth on the career scorers list with 179 (35-144) points. In short, he is the ultimate offensive defenseman. "HE'S OUR general," said Western Michigan head coach Bill Wilkinson. "He's done everything we asked of him and more. He's simply an outstanding player." The goaltenders have also stood out for the Broncos, led sophomore Bill Horn. Saturday's game against Lake Superior was the second team All-American's third contest this season in which he stopped more than 40 shots. He has a 3.99 goals against average and has made 275 saves this season, the most of any goalie in the CCHA. All of which makes for an interesting matchup this weekend. "If we want to stay within the top four teams, than this weekend is crucial to us," Wilkinson said. "Michigan, Ferris State, and Miami are all breathing down our backs with that three way tie for sixth. Michigan is a tough team." And they will be an even tougher team if they can pull out a couple of those close games-tQ add some confidence., Berenson ... still optimistic Blue hopes to shove down the Buckeyes (Continued from Page>1) "There can be advantages when you're on the road. "WE'RE NOT going to let their crowd keep us from doing the things we want to do on offense," he said. "We'll stand there until they're quiet." But the real scare for the Wolverines is Buckeye receiver Cris Carter. Michigan defensive coordinator Gary Moeller called him "Their Carter," comparing him to Wolverine great Anthony Carter. The junior All-American candidate is OSU's all-time leadin receiver with 157 grabs, 25 for a touchdown, and 2589 yards. This year he has hauled in 58 passes for 991 yards and nine touchdowns. "WE'RE NOT going to stop him," said 'Schembechler. "The important thing is to contain him. We don't want to give Wim the big play because he can break it open. We're going to do sonecdifferent things. We'll know where he is." Carter, the brother of former Indiana basketball star Butch Carter, is obviously high on OSU head coach Earle Bruce's list. "He's had a tremendous year for us. He's a truly great receiver and is an All-American for ti,-not just as a receiver, but also as a downfield blocker." THE MAN getting the ball to Carter is senior Jim Karsatos, not a favorite among Buckeye fans because of his laid-back image. Still, his opponents respect him. "Karsatos is a great passer," said linebacker Andy Moeller. "He's big. He sits back there and throws. He has a very strong arm." The Buckeye defense has similar numbers to Michigan's defense. They were brilliant in shutting ou4 Minnesota four weeks ago, but were pathetic two weeks later when they gave up over 400 yards in the air to Northwestern. LINEBACKER Chris Spielman, whose picture was on the cover of the Wheaties cereal box while he was in high school, is the OSU defensive leader with a conference-leading 165 aickles, four interceptions, and two sacks.' Harbaugh called Spielman a "superman." Harbaugh, however, may have the kryptonite to get through the Buckeye defense. If he does, he will lead the Wolverines back into the Rose Bowl. That's Pasadena, not Dallas. That's good, not bad. That would bring joy, not misery. I GRIDDE PICKS Get those Griddes picks in to 420 Maynard for a free Pizza Bob's pizza. By Midnight Friday.
