Ever since Bobby Orr used to lace up the skates and tally over 100 points a ear, the offensive defenseman has Peen one of the ultimate hockey luxuries. Western Michigan will probably never appear on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, but the Broncos' hockey program is blessed with the equivalent of a Mercedes 380-SL in the person of Wayne Gagne. Gagne, Western's captain, is erhaps the premier scoring defense - man in college hockey today. His 76 points last year was tops among the nation's defensemen, and he held the Central Collegiate Hockey Association career record 'When I was younger I was a little jealous, but I've learned to accept (not being drafted). "When I was younger I gone, and the Broncos are now in Frank Anzalone, head coach of Lake was a little jealous, but I've learned the middle of the CCHA pack with a 6-6 record. Head coach Bill Wilkinson now relies on Gagne to run the power play and kill penalties as well as score and play defense. "He's the type of guy that makes things happen," said Wilkinson. "He's dangerous with the puck and has an unbelievable stick." The fifth-year coach is not troubled by Gagne's size. "He's not going to knock people down so the idea is for him to clear the puck out. He has to use his finesse," said the man who beat out Minnesota- Duluth, Clarkson and Wisconsin for Gagne's services. Gagne had 59 assists last year, a CCHA single-season record for defensemen, and according to Wilkinson, "he plays like a center. He always knows where his teammates are on the ice." The modest Gagne will graduate in April as a physical education major. He is considering going to Europe to continue playing hockey but says he will take whatever chance to play that comes along. Until then, Gagne will concentrate on improving the Broncos position in the standings. Opposing coaches had better heed Anzalone's advice and keep Gagne in check if they plan on stopping the Broncos. Says Anzalone, "He's 90 percent of Western's offense when he's on the ice. Too much Wayne Gagne means too much Western Michigan (which) means losses for the other team."
