No dates yet, but Boston will definitely go on the road in support of their new album, ThirdStage. Samy Hagar's former guitar- ist, Gary Phil, will be in the band, even though he doesn't play on the new album. * Julian Lennon is going back to the drawing board after less-than-spectacular sales of his last album. EDDIE'S REVENGE A sequel to Eddie and the Cruisers, which rock- eted John Cafferty to popularity, is in the mak- ing. The film will continue the story of lead singer Eddie, who disappears from the band at the height of his fame. MONKEE BUSINESS The company that's bringing The New Monkees to television next year has announced plans for another musical sitcom. To be called Rock Can- dy, this one has a story line so saccharine that it crystallizes the brain upon viewing. Audrey and Jane Landers play twins who are temps by day and leaders of a band, called Rock Candy and the Jawbreakers, by night. Dick Van Patten plays Daddy, a retired musician who runs a music- school out of his garage (for garage bands, no doubt). Unmercifully, the show calls for at least one song to be performed per segment. Tina Louise, of Gilligan's sland'fame, portrays Van Patten's ex- (and who would blame her!) wife. MONKEE SEE, MONKEE DO And speaking of the Monkees, they recently met with ABC-TV and Columbia Pictures execs to discuss doing a movie of the week updating the adventures of the group. Michael Nesmith remains the missing link. He has not rejoined the group and is busy producing his own films with his company, Pacific Arts Productions. Chuck Berry will star in a movie highlighting his three-decade career. To be directed by Taylor Hackford (White Nights), Hail, Hail, Rock and Rollwill feature footage from Berry's recent St. Louis concert. In fact, two-thirds of the flm wll be footage from various Berry concerts, with the rest comprised of interviews with his associates through the years. Keith Richards and Robbie Robertson are serving as consultants on the project, scheduled for a spring 1987 theatrical and video release. PIPE DREAMS Lorimar, which recently purchased the MGM lot, is planning to make a film of California Dreamin', the book that Michelle Phillips wrote about the Mamas and the Papas. The former Mama wants her daughter, Chyna, playing her part and Carney Wilson, the daughter of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, playing the part of the late Mama Cass Elliot. Michelle is currently on TV's Hotel in the role of the concierge. (Tell me anyone would have believed this 20 years ago.) Chyna (Does she know Grace Slick's daughter?) makes her screen debut in John Hughes' next film, Some Kind of Wonderful LONDON CALLING Michael Des Barres, late of Power Station fame, will be seen in his first starring role in a feature film, Nghtflyers, due in early 1987. He plays a telepath on a mission to communicate with aliens. Lisa Blount, of An Officertand a Gen- tleman, and Dynasty's Michael Praed co-star. HE-E-E-RE'S FRANK! Frank Zappa has got a great idea for a talk show, which he will host,of course. To be called Night School, the show would allow the host to combat what he calls "pseudo-religious pro- gramming and politics espoused by fundamen- talists and other snake oil salesmen." The show would also include comedy skits and music, as well as the perfunctory interviews. Daniel Schorr would discuss the news and Zappa would occa- sionally treat the audiences to one of his lectures on philosophy. Now, all he needs is an offer. Madonna's next movie, Slammer, is described as a "contemporary screwball romantic come- dy," as opposed to Shanghai Surprise, which was a period screwball romantic comedy. Let's hope times are a-changin' for the better. RENT-A-STONE The recently released Mick Jagger film, Run- ning Out ofLuck, was the first full-length motion picture to be released directlyon video, by-pass- ing completely the theatrical circuit. POLICE BRUTALITY In his next movie, Sting will play a white South African doctor imprisoned and tortured for work- ing in black hospitals. It is based on the true story of the first white man to die in South African police custody. I;. Wright State University University Center Board The Survivor song, Eye of the Tiger," which was the theme for Rocky //l, has itself inspired a movie. The Scotti Brothers label, which originally released the song, has gotten into the movie biz and has announced that one ofits first eight fea- ture films will be based on the lyrics of "Tiger." The movie, about a war hero who returns to his home town only to find it overrun by a paramli- tary drug ring (I kid you not), will star Gary Busey and was shot, appropriately, in Los Angeles.
