OSU-Michigan battle
renews intense rivalry

By ADAM MARTIN
Jim Harbaugh said he was sick
to his stomach after Michigan's
multi-turnover affair last Saturday.
Two days later, however, he has
made a miraculous recovery.
"I guarantee we will beat Ohio
State and be in Pasadena,"
Harbaugh said.r
The Wolverines' signal-caller,
usually humble in the Michigan
mold, changed his ways just 48
hours after the Wolverines suffered
their first defeat of the season.
Yesterday he was a picture of
healthy confidence.
"I CAN JUST tell you, we're
gonna win and we're gonna go to
the Rose Bowl," said Harbaugh.
"When the odds are against us,
that's gonna produce our greatest
victory."
If such pronouncements sound
familiar, they should. Guard
Antoine Joubert predicted with
unwavering confidence that the

Michigan basketball team would
beat Michigan State in Crisler
Arena last year. But Antoine was
wrong.
Harbaugh might succumb to the
same fate, but he doesn't think
Michigan will lose, and he is not
afraid to say so.
"Hell, we're gonna do it," he
said.
Call him the witch doctor.
Blue Banter
-Harbaugh wasn't the only
Wolverine upset after the 20-17
debacle against the Golden Gophers.
Strong tackle John "Jumbo" Elliott
said he would like to burn the
Minnesota-Michigan film.
-Word has it that defensive
lineman Mark Messner was a
persona non grata in
Communication class yesterday.
When he walked in the other
students booed him, and the
professor told Messner to keep his
mouth shut - all in good fun, of
course.-
-The Wolverines' loss to
Minnesota did more than break their
13-game winning streak; the
Gophers snapped Michigan's 15-
game unbeaten string and 14-game
home winning streak also.
-Against Minnesota the
Wolverines managed only 134 yards
on the ground, their lowest total
this season and their lowest mark
since Michigan tied Illinois, 3-3,
last season.

Coming off his poorest performance of this season in the 20-17 loss to Min-
nesota, Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh has guaranteed a victory
in the showdown against Ohio State this Saturday.
Michig

By PHIL NUSSEL
The Michigan-Ohio State classic
has always been known as "the
game," but this year, for the first
time since 1980, it is truly "the
game."
There's no Iowas, Illini, or
anyone else distorting the picture
this year. The,Michigan-Ohio State
winner goes to the Rose Bowl in
Pasadena, the loser goes to the
Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
The Wolverines (6-1 in the Big
Ten, 9-1 overall) will meet the
Buckeyes (7-0, 9-2) in Columbus
Saturday at 12:17 p.m. CBS will
televise the game nationally.
Michigan is a two-point favorite.
"I KNEW unless there were
some extenuating circumstances,
that it would come down to this
game," Michigan head coach Bo
Schembechler said yesterday at his
weekly press luncheon. "We always
like to see it come down to the last
game. We like it this way."
Since "the game" was moved to
the last week of the season, it has
been "the game" 17 times. Ohio
State holds the margin, 8-7-2, in
those games. However, since
Schembechler arrived in 1969,
Michigan is 5-4-1 in "the game."
Overall, the veteran Michigan boss
is 8-8-1 against "that team down
south," as he calls them.
To many, including
Schembechler, the 1969 contest
was the most memorable. It was
Schembechler's debut against his
old mentor, Woody Hayes.
Schembechler was an assistant
under Hayes at Ohio State from
1958-63.
The Buckeyes were 8-0 and-had
one of their best teams ever, but
Michigan won the game at home,
24-12.
SINCE THEN, the rivalry has
only become greater.
"I think the 1969 game propelled

all this," Schembechler said.
"Woody had perhaps his greatest
team and we beat them. I think that
meant to everyone that Michigan
was going to be competition from
now on. And that's the way it's
turned out:"
Schembechler ended up going 5-
4-1 against his old boss until Hayes
retired in 1979 after slugging a
Clemson player in the Gator Bowl.
The two still keep in touch and
spoke last week over the phone -
they don't speak during the week of
"the game."
"I think about Woody a lot,"
Schembechler said. "Really, more
than any one individual involved in
this game, he has made it what it
is. I can recall as a young coach,
not associated with either team,
coming into Michigan Stadium for
this particular game and the stadium
was not filled.
"HE REFUELED the rivalry.
It's been good, it's fun."
When asked-about his own role
in the rivalry, Schembechler said
with a grin, "I refueled Woody."
Earle Bruce took over for Hayes
and, despite being criticized by
Ohio State fans, holds a 4-3 mark
against Michigan and has taken the
Buckeyes to a pair of Rose Bowls
in seven seasons.
The criticism mounted this year
when Ohio State started out losing
its first two games to Alabama and
Washington. Since then, the Bucks
marked up nine straight wins to set
up Saturday's clash.
Even though "the game" is back,
the days of the Big Two, Little
Eight are not, according to
Schembechler.
"It's hard for me to say that after
Minnesota," he said. "I don't think
it is that way. You play so many
good teams. I do think the Big Two
will be around, but I think the other
teams are right in there close behind
us."

"I HOPE they don't look at

"It's still a matter of the great

Ohio State, is 9-2 overall and 7-

have won their last nine games and
have locked up at least a share of
the Big Ten championship.
"I WOULD normally like
Michigan to come into Ohio
