Combine Michigan State's talent and experience with Michigan's inexperience and third-period blues and you have the underlying ingredients for Michigan's two losses this past weekend. On Friday night, the Michigan squad had found itself in the same predicament that it had found itself in way too often this season: third period, tied score, and the opposition controlling the action in Michigan's zone. And yes, the result was no different. Mitch Messier fired a shot in with just 31 seconds remaining in the game to hand the Wolverines a heartbreaking 7-6 defeat. "They didn't win it, we lost it," said a dejected head coach Red Berenson. "They're too explosive of a team to give them that many scoring chances. We really broke down defensively." The game started poorly for the Wolverines. Just three and a half minutes into the game, the Wolverines found themselves trailing the defending NCAA champions, 2-0, on goals by Brian McReynolds and Bobby Reynolds. It looked as if it might be a very long night for the home team. "I started slowly," said goalie Warren Sharples who turned -away 35 shots in defeat. "I was struggling to keep my head in the game. I was too busy watching this Michigan State team that I had heard so much about." Sharples managed to get back into the thick of things, though, and so did his Wolverine teammates. They trailed only by a 3-2 margin at the first intermission after goals by Brad McCaughey and Billy Powers. When the second period started, Michigan came out firing. Myles O'Connor, one of few Wolverines who played well all weekend, netted a power play goal at 3:59. Rob Brown followed it up with his first goal of the season at 6:48. Michigan State scored two quick goals before Bryan Deasley tied the game at five at the end of two. The momentum of the game shifted at 9:14 of the third period. After Deasley scored his second goal of the evening to tie the score at six, Michigan State head coach Ron Mason pulled his standout goalie Norm Foster, only to replace him with another standout in Bob Essensa. From that point on, the Wolverines failed to muster a shot on goal. "When we made the change, our team got a big lift," Mason said. "Our players really went after them at the other end of the rink. It's a real shocker when we take one of our goalies out. "Tonight, Norm was not as sharp as usual and he looked like he had to work at making the saves. Normally, he's very relaxed in there." In the final nine minutes, the Spartans dominated the young Wolverines. Sharples kept his team in the game, but in the end, the opposition was too much to handle. Visions of an upset vanished with Messier's goal. "Sharples had stopped me five or six times before the goal," said Messier, a senior from Regina, Saskatchewan. "Coach Mason told me not to get down. It was the first shot all night I didn't aim at. I just saw the open corner and shot." Saturday night was a different story. On their home ice at Munn Ice Arena, the Spartans didn't wait as long to put the Wolverines out of their misery. After Michigan jumped to a 3-2 lead eight and a half minutes into the second period, the Spartans declared open season on freshman goaltender Glen Neary. He was bombarded by enemy shots coming from all angles, seven of them hitting their target. "There was nothing I could do," said Neary who now has an 0-6 record despite playing well. "I can't score goals; I can only stop them." Neary was right. The 9-3 loss was hardly his fault. "Neary played a good game," Berenson said. But it was indicative as to how the rest of the squad played. Defensive lapses and poor special teams plagued the team all night. They let up two shorthanded goals and three power play goals. "When we got penalties, they seemed to score every time," Neary said. "They didn't play any better. They just capitalized on their power play - big time. " The loss left a bitter taste in the mouth of the entire team as tempers ran high in the locker room after the .game. , "The Michigan State team tonight was no different than the team we lost to by a goal," said angry left-winger Bryan Deasley, "We were the different team out there. We were in the game going into the third period. There's no excuses for it. Everyone is just sick and tired of losing." The loss left Michigan with 4 disappointing 3-9 mark in the CCHA. The Wolverines have now lost all six of their road games this year and have not won on the road since January 10 when they upset Bowling Green, 7-4. And things don't get any easier with a home, and-home series next Saturday and Sunday against defending CCHA- playoff champion Westerr Michigan.
