ARTS The Michigan Daily Monday, November 17, 1986 Page 7 'Co.' in need of some fine tuning By Seth Flicker Making people laugh is mighty hard business. It takes creativity and careful observation. One has to have the ability to take a simple idea and stretch it to the mind's limit and, in the same vein, take a complex idea and dissolve it to its simplest form. When a comedian has had this sort of effect on the audience while, at the same time, making them laugh, the goal has truly been acheived. The Comedy Company, which performed this past week at Mendelsson Theatre, has almost acheived this goal. This year's show consisted of 19 short, comedy vignettes written, performed, produced and directed by students. Being a student is, per - haps, the hardest hurdle to over - come in a production such as this. Performing for strangers is hard enough without having the pressure of not looking stupid in front of family and friends. This did not seem a problem for the Company, though. The skits were performed smoothly with hardly a hint of hesitation. The problem was in the skits themselves. Many of the vignettes were too overdrawn. The art to good comedy writing is not to drown your audience, but to realize when your point has been made. A comedy skit does not have to end in a resolution; the trick is to stop while you're ahead. Other problems were that there were too many sex farces and English accents. Most of the skits, though, were really funny and, with a little work, Grade A material. "'Nuts," a take- off on the Peanuts' TV specials, was top of the bunch along with "Elevator Operator," a sex farce taking place in an office building elevator. Other vignettes that worked well were "The Addict," a spoof on junk food addicts, "Yellowstone Trip," a vacation slide show with fantastic possi - bilities, and "Wild World of Sports," a take-off of the ABC show in the form of a 'pick-up' contest. Some the others, like "Bedtime for Shakespeare," about the writer's sex life, and "Up the Fjord Without a Paddle," where Bergaman tries his hand at the Japanese Godzilla flicks, had great ideas but a poor script. Overall, the actors were quite good but not all Company members are made the same. Some members that deserve extra praise were Matthew Schlein, adorable Katy Wood, Erin Hartman and H. Anthony Lehv. The other members , like the whole show, were very funny but need some fine tuning. With just a little work, editing and practice the Comedy Company can really be top-notch. There is no doubt about it, though, you made me laugh...and I'm a real bastard. Comedy Company players hammed it up last weekend.
