Bo aims to The Michigan Daily- Friday, November 14, 1986- Page 11 surpass Yost (Continued from Page 1) the best rushing team in our league. We've played against, back-to-back, Illinois and Purdue, who really do not rush the ball. It's not their main method of moving it. "But with Minnesota, they're averaging somewhere around 235 yards a game rushing. You start to overplay the option plays and the run; they throw the ball over your head... Minnesota has moved the ball on everybody they've played." Except perhaps against Oklahoma, where the Gophers were routed, 63-0. In fact, Minnesota's fortunes have been feast or famine: of its four losses, three have been by 29 points or more (to Michigan State, 52-23 and Ohio State, 33-0). The other defeat came at the hands of the Tigers of Univerisity of Pacific, 24-20. Worse, Pacific (4-5) is not exactally washing over its opponents. WHEN MINNESOTA does move the ball, it's behind surprising freshman running back Darrell Thompson or quarterback Rickey Foggie. Foggie, a junior, is no mystery to the Big Ten. He has run the Minnesota option since his freshman year and is equally dangerous passing as he is running. As Schembechler indicated, the problem is when opponents begin to overplay the option, leaving them vunerable to the long pass. Foggie completed only five passes against Wisconsin, but they were for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Thompson, however, has burst on the scene. He averages 6.0 yards a carry and 119.3 yards a game, easily the best in the conference. Just as impressive is his team- leading 20 catches for 192 yards and three touchdowns. "RIGHT NOW he's the hottest back in this league," Schembechler said. "If he's not the best, at least he's the hottest right now. We've got our work cut our for us." Freshmen running backs don't run for more than 1,000 yards (Thompson has 1,074) without help. Although Minnesota's offensive line is not outstanding, center Ray Hitchcock is an excellent blocker. How well Hitchcock controls Michigan noseguard- Billy Harris could determine how well Minnesota runs up the middle. "Ray Hitchcock is a tremendously strong and quick football player," Gutekunst said of the senior snapper. "He graded 100 percent (on pass blocking) for the second week in a row. That's quite an accomplishment for a center who has not been in a passing offense." MICHIGAN'S strong offense will be bolstered by the the return of linemen John Elliot and Mike Husar. Elliot is battling a recurrent neck injury while Husar should see action after pulling ligaments in his knee against Indiana. Defensive back Garland Rivers, who missed Purdue with a sore shoulder, is expected to start. NON-STOP COPY SHOP Kinko's is open 24 hours. The Wolverine men's and women's teams will try to prolong the 6 eason for one more week tomorrow when they travel to Normal, Ill., for the NCAA Districts with a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships. While it's almost certain that the Big Ten Champions from Wisconsin will win the men's and women's titles, the Wolverines have a good shot to qualify. IN THE women's district, the rinner of this weekend's meet will automatically qualify for the NCAAs and although second place won't guarantee a similar trip, there's a good chance that the runner-up will get an at-large bid. The Wolverine women have had a tough season filled with injuries and illnesses, but coach Sue Parks thinks her team is finally ready to peak. "Everybody is healthy and ready to go," she said. "It's the healthiest we've been all year." Mindy Rowand and Cheri Sly were the team's top finishers at the Big Ten meet and they should be in GRIDD .1. Minnesota at MICHIGAN (pick total points) top form again, but seniors Kelli Bert and Melissa Thompson will be the key runners this week. Both are healthy now and should have their best races of the season. ROUNDING OUT Michigan's seven entries will be Ava Udvadia, Jennifer McPeck, and Sarah Gray. Gray is replacing Traci Babcock who finished 44th in the Big Ten's. In the Big Ten meet, the Wolverines placed fourth behind Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northwestern. The Badgers have won the national championship the past two years and are heavy favorites. But Parks, the Big Ten Coach of the Year, said she believes her team can compete with their other conference rivals for second. "I think we have the ability to finish second. It's just going to take a good day from everybody," Parks said.
