And plenty of it. Some bad news first. The Spartans, defending NCAA champions, enter the weekend series in first place in the CCHA. MSU is coming off a split against Illinois-Chicago last weekend, icersr when it suffered its only loss against nine wins. Not exactly the best time for head coach Red Berenson's squad to start its climb in the standings. THE GOOD news is that when fierce rivals like these two square off, anything is possible. "Whenever Michigan plays Michigan State, there is always excitement in the air," said I 24 HR. "It used to be we were playing MSU, but now we are playing the defending national champions and the first place team. We've got everything to gain and it should bring out the best in our team."- "This is always a dogfight," said Michigan State head coach Ron Mason. "I know Michigan will play their best and work their hardest. It's the toughest game of this year for us." BAD NEWS: Michigan State has talent spread all around. The Spartans feature a strong offense led by center Kevin Miller (7-18- 25), right wing Mitch Messier (10- 11-21), and center Bill Shibicky (13-6-19). Backing them up on defense is last year's second team All-America Don McSween and the solid Tom Tilley. Goaltending position, however, is the team's backbone. Bob Essensa and Norm Foster represent the finest netminding duo in the country. Last season, Essensa was named second-team All-CCHA and first-team All-Academic. Foster was chosen to the NCAA All- to check No.1 Tournament team. This season they have picked up right where they left off. Essensa sports a 3.00 goals against average and Foster a 3.58. "IT'S THE PART of our team that we rely on most," said Mason. "They have the experience and the talent. It's definitely our strong point." The good news is that these goalies are not invincible. Just ask Brad Jones, Michigan's leading scorer (9-13-22). "They're definitely top-notch goalies, but they're definitely not unbeatable. Good goaltenders are only as good as the team in front of them and State's got a good team. But they're nothing that can't be beaten. I think we are definitely going to take them by surprise." PERHAPS Jones is a little optimistic for a 3-7 team that is tied for sixth place in the CCHA and for the most part has been bad news. The good news, however, is that Michigan has been in all but one of its games. Out of the10 games, nine of them have been tied or had a one-goal margin in the third period. Six of those games resulted in losses, two in overtime. A break here and there would mean the difference between a few wins and a few notches in the standings. But there is still more bad news. The Wolverines will be shorthanded on Friday. Jeff Norton, the captain and leader of the team, will miss the game due to a suspension he received for fighting in last Saturday's game against Ferris State. The good news is he'll be back in uniform on Saturday. The Wolverines will need him as they will have all they can handle this weekend. Micidgan State at Northwestern Michigan State's (5-4, 3-3) hopes of going to a decent bowl game crashed to a halt last weekend when the Spartans were bounced by Indiana. MSU can still go to some fleabag bowl if it gets by Northwestern (2-7, 0-6) this week and Wisconsin next week. Spartan receiver Andre Rison Illinois at Indiana After upsetting MSU last week, Indiana (6-3, 3-3) is entertaining thoughts of post-season action. If the Hoosiers can get by Illinois (3- 6, 2-4), they will likely go bowling for the holidays. The Illini are coming off an upset victory over Iowa, about which Illinois coach Mike White said, "It almost feels. like we won the national championship."
