Page 8- The Michigan Daily - Monday, November 10, 1986 Iggy bathes in beer, garbage, and fun By Danny Plotnick Iggy Pop might be a thirty-nine year old rock star touring for the first time in four years in support of his most accessible record ever, but boy can he still entertain. He flipped the bird, thrusted his pelvis, spit, ripped off his shirt, mockingly jacked off, and snarled at Saturday night's St. Andrew's audience to his hearts content. The audience loved it-they threw beer at him (by the kegful). He loved it-he bathed in it-he demanded more. "The more beer you throw, the more I like it. Because, after all, I'm cool, and I sing cool songs, and I am cool" (or something like that). Let's face it-the man is a good judge of character-he is cool. If nothing else, all the beer and garbage thrown at him should attest to that. Ann Arbor's favorite psychotic (and former Discount Records employee) is soaking in his new- found success. His rapport with the audience proved that he's having some fun. Saturday's only short - coming was the song selection, which could have been better. He played at least eight of Blah Blah Blah's nine songs. They came off better live than on vinyl, but they still managed to drag things down a bit. After doing a hell of a version of the classic "Five Foot One," he'd drag the proceedings down with a weaker, slower song of Blah Blah Blah, only to rip into a monster rendition of "T.V. Eye," only to drag it all back down again with some more new material. He jazzed up the newer stuff by snarling, egging the audience to throw things at him, and jumping and kicking his way around stage. But the best stuff was still the old classics like "I Got A Right," which kicked the set off, "Some Weird Sin," "Gimmee Danger," and the hellacious rendition of the Stooges' "Down on the Street," during which his clothes went flying. For a quick second it looked like he was about to whip out his infamous pecker-what a tease. The encores were the show's highlight, 'cause the energy never lulled. "Lust For Life" had Iggy's band getting into the act as the guitarist played while being hoisted above the sold out crowd by the crowd. The band was tight; they weren't a bunch of studio showoffs,, living out their rock and roll. fantasies in the wake of Iggy's trail of garbage. "Rawpower" was as' ruling as ever, and the new single "Cry For Love" fit in nicely with those Iggy classics. Sure he didn't whip it out or spread peanut butter and glass all over himself, but hell-he's Iggy Pop-he's cool-he's got a right to do whatever he wants. Al Jarreau has long been a prominent jazz vocalist; George Benson, Michael Franks, and The Manhattan Transfer are just a few of his musical peers. Yet, Benson and The Manhattan Transfer have successfully gained a wider audience that includes Top 40 listeners in addition to their faithful jazz audience. Michael Franks seems satisfied with his ,popularity among jazz listeners, but Jarreau has continually tried to cross over. His most succcessful attempt comes with L is for Lover. Here, he trades his long-time producer Jay Graydon for Nile Rodgers(David Bowie, Duran Duran) on this- his tenth- album. The result is a record that is energetic and joyful, and places Jarreau among some new peers: Lionel Richie and Billy Ocean. The first cut, "Tell me What I Gotta Do," is the warmup and it's familiar territory for fans of Jarreau. Co-written by Graydon, this song is more in the style of Jarreau's theme for the television show Moonlighting , as was most of his music. This song segues into the Steve Winwood influenced "L is for Lover," the title tune. The beat is borrowed from Winwood, and Nile Rodger's guitar playing dances notes around that beat which makes for a very danceable single. Largely, the other songs on the album are a successful marriage of pop music and pop jazz: getting the heavy drum beat characteristic of any dance song in harmony with the nightclub sound of cool jazz. "Says" does that and so does "Pleasure" and "We've Got Telepathy," the latter two being reminscent of a Pointer Sisters' hit single. Once again this is done wonderfully with the last cut, "Real Tight" that has basslines and brass arrangements from the Kool and the Gang school of music. Sure, you say, Jarreau can't lose with borrowing music from already established pop artists. I say it's more Rodgers adapting these pop music styles to a versatile vocalist like Al Jarreau that makes L is for Lover a good album. It also shows how Jarreau can do oh-so-mudh better in the pop music field than some of his newfound peers. But then of course, there's Luther Vandross. .-Adrian Jones I 4 1, ,rf lurn-u pm FACULTY SIGN-UPS FOR FLORENCE f Satta 'S sounds beat apartheid By Tim Huett What do you get when you fuse the pulsating rythm of I-TAL with the driving beat of First Light?
