ARTS The Michigan Daily Monday, November 10, 1986 Page 7. R The three sides of Hitchcock By John Logie 1.) Robyn Hitchcock is in the "Element of Light" That's the title of Hitchcock's new album with his band the Egyptians, and that's also a pretty fair description of Hitchcock's position in the musical firmament. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck called Hitchcock's recent live album,"the best live album I've ever heard." Creem magazine selected Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians as one of their "Picks for '87." The latter honor would seem to sugest that next year will be the year that everything gels for the band, both musically and commercially, but in reality the honor is more retroactive than it is speculative. Robyn Hitchcock and his bands have been producing excellent music all decade long, and commercial success looms only because we're all just now finding out how good he's been. Tonight's performance at the Nectarine Ballroom should provide only further testament to this fact, their third Ann Arbor gig in a year. Hitchcock said in a telephone interview that he was surprised that "anyone was aware of or even remembered," his first band, the Soft Boys because the band never achieved commercial success in its lifetime, but fans of Hitchcock's current work are now discovering bonus fun in the old vinyl. And there are bound to be a lot more fans of Hitchcock's current work soon. Element of Light, is yet another witty, warm, and haunting album. It serves as a fine introduction to Hitchcock, ranging from the moody, pretty "Raymond Chandler Evening" to the twisted joy of "Ted, Woody, and Junior" (about three bathing men who, "have a way with lather.") to "Bass," a bouncing rocker about the fish, not the instrument. While the record does not represent a stylistic leap from Fegmania! , Hitchcock's last studio LP, it does manage to maintain the high standards set by its predecessor. 2.) It's a wonderful world, with a lot of strange men. When told of the Nectarine Ballroom's notorious bubble machine, Hitchcock expressed. concern,"that may be a bit of a problem...because we have glass shoes, and we're likely to fall over." Hitchcock and the band, in their Blind Pig gigs, proved themselves not only as musicians, but as performers. Roger Jackson, the most energetic and mobile keyboard player ever, deserves special mention, and as a unit the members are all emissaries from an ethereal world populated by large quantities of insects and fish. Hitchcock warned that drummer Morris Windsor is suffering from a "festering" knee (Windsor says that "all the wires are hanging out") but that shouldn't seriously hamper things tonight, as the show would be worthwhile even if Windsor had the leg amputated (not that anyone wishes that on him). It's just that there are too many good things to watch for to quibble about whether tde bass drum is thudding regularly. For example, Hitchcock's spoken introductions to songs, told in a slightly nervous, slightly rambling, slightly hilarious manner, open the concert-goer to a world of meaning and madness that is worth a significant percentage of the price of admission. 3.) Please don't call him Reg, it's not his name! (Not yet.) "My name, I hope, will never be Reg," Hitchcock said, with em - phasis, "I of all people will never be Reg...don't call me Reg. No." I The inimitable Robyn Hitchcock and his band, the Egyptians, will De playing at the Nectarine Ballroom tonight. Performance time is set for 10 p.m.; the Minneapolis band Figures will open the show.
