I enjoyed the play and its premise, bpt it left me wyith many unanswered questions. The play features seven women in various roles, each showing how women can function differently in society. The first act introduces some at a dinner party given by Marlene, the corporate woman, to Media group Pr eS er n t * present readings Tonight, Eyemediae presents Chris and George Tysh as part of its Michigan-Area Poets Series. Each of the women is utterly self-involved and they ignore one another in order to tell their own stories. Meanwhile, Marlene tries to concentrate on each of them in an attempt to learn from their experiences. While this scene was presented flawlessly with a smooth, con - tinuous flow of the conversation, it was difficult to discern which character should be concentrated on since they often spoke at the same time. It also made one wonder whether Churchill was trying to say that women who have achieved great success are disinterested in anyone but themselves. Churchill makes this point again when the wife of one of Marlenes co-workers comes to plead with Marlene to turn down her promotion so that the woman's husband can have it instead. She explains that she is concerned about his health since he was not chosen for Marlene's job. Marlene orders her to leave and then shows no compassion when the man has a heart attack. Does Churchill believe that women of power are really that heartless? We also learn as the play progresses that Marlene gave her illegitimate child to her sister in order to pursue her career. While Marlene climbs up the corporate ladder, her sister's marriage falls apart and her daughter develops learning disabilities. Marlene, however, pays little attention to the problems of her own family as she works to further her own career. Top Girls provides us with a question of choice: should a woman still be forced to decide between a career and motherhood? It seems that Marlene's character is so one- dimensional that she doesn't believe that today's woman can have both. She is so affected by the historical women in the first act that she is unable to live in the present. e If t each actress truly knew her char - acter. Marlene, played by Shawn Yardley, was everything that we epitomize as a corporate woman on the move. Deborah Allen is very convincing as the awkward, clumsy daughter of Marlene. Initially, it was difficult to believe that this larger woman could play an adol - escent but soon one believed that she really was an unwieldly fifteen year old. Thorne still enabled the audience to understand what they should by focusing on. Women may no longer agree that the career woman has to be it loner, but Top Girls does present at view we will always need to consider. The show will be perfor- med for two more weekends at the. Residential College Auditorium and' one needn't be a pushy career woman to enjoy it. GRADUATE NURSES Your education will not end with graduation.
