"WE WERE just physically overmatched," he said. "Our line could not hold their lines. Consequently we've had to revert to throwing the ball." Passing duties have been split between senior Shane Lamb and freshman Brian Menhausen. Lamb has thrown more than the freshman signal caller, but the two should see equal time on the field Saturday. "We plan to give them both an opportunity to play." White said. "It's helped us in a year when we don't have an established quarterback. It's helped us to at least execute the offense." LAMB, SIXTH in the Big Ten in passing efficiency, has collected most of his yards on short passes, according to Michigan assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Gary Moeller. That type of game plan has been fairly successful against the Wolverines this season. "We'll try to take some of it away," Moeller said of the short passing game, "but we want to prevent the long pass." The aerial plays usually go in wide receiver Stephen Pierce's direction. The senior leads the Big Ten with 5.1 catches per game. BUT IT'S not the passes the Illini catch so much as it is the ones they don't that has determined their fate. Moeller said dropped passes and interceptions have been Illinois' main problems. Besides the team's 12 interceptions, Illinois has committed 17 fumbles. Defensively, however, Illinois makes few gaffes. "Their defense is strong," Schembechler said. "I think they put a lot of pressure on passers, they play very hard, they pursue hard." The Illini pass rush won't likely ruffle Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh. The senior from Kalamazoo has scrambled more successfully than an egg beater while piling up the second-best passing statistics in the nation. Harbaugh is coming off his second 300-yard passing game, the only Michigan signal caller to reach that plateau, and according to Schembechler, doesn't appear ready to fall off soon. "Our pass-run ratio is about the same," the 18-year head coach said. "It's just that we're much, much more efficient, and we're mbre efficient because we have a great quarterback in Harbaugh." But Harbaugh, who is averaging 226.6 passing yards a game, may not receive the same protection he usually enjoys. Agase in hospital From staff reports Michigan special teams coach Alex Agase is in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital undergoing tests on his heart. Agase is in stable condition, according to a hospital source. Agase, in his fifth year on Bo Schembechler's staff, was admitted into the hospital Wednesday after a checkup. Assistant head coach Gary Moeller visited Agase yesterday morning and said the former Northwestern and Purdue head coach was in good spirits. ,r RACKHAM PRED OCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS Applications are now available in your department.
