Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 28, 1986 Unbeaten Bo serves Blue-plate special q By BARB McQUADE Seven weeks into the 1986 football season, the picture is coming into focus. Michigan (7-0, 4-0 in the Big Ten) remains perched atop the Big Ten standings along with. Ohio State, and is one of only four teams in the nation that is unbeaten or untied. But Wolverine head coach Bo Schembechler prefers to tune out thoughts of a national championship and zoom in on this week's opponent. "I know enough about this game to know that you should put it in the back of your mind and keep it there," the 18-year head coach said at his weekly press conference. "I knowswe've got a tough game against Illinois coming up at Michigan Stadium and that's what we'll zero in " LAST YEAR the Wolverines If Your Hair Isn't Becoming to You - You Should Be Coming to Us. DASCOLA STYLISTS Liberty off State ....... 668-9329 Maple Village ......... 761-2733 tied the Fighting Illini, 3-3, in Champaign. Since then, Michigan has won 11 straight. "Even though we tied the game, we felt good about ourselves," Schembechler said. "I think that team really came together after the Illinois game. Nobody has beaten us since." Michigan's current unbeaten streak of 13 games is the best in the NCAA. Schembechler agrees that his team belongs among the top four, but that's as far out on a limb Schembechler will go. He's seen too many teams fall out of the tree. "THE DIFFERENCE between the top teams is insignificant," said the Michigan coach, who shares perfect records with Miami (Fla.), Penn State, and Auburn. "If there are only four unbeaten, untied teams out there after seven weeks, can you imagine what's going to happen in the next four? There's a lot of parity out there." Despite Bo's usual remarks about the importance of every Michigan game, he is likely to be interested in Saturday's contest in Iowa City. The 5-1 Hawkeyes host Ohio State (6-2). An Iowa victory Saturday and in the rest of its games would remove a major obstacle in Michigan's path to Pasadena. Provided it wins its next three games, even a Michigan loss to the Buckeyes would send the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl. Since Ohio State and Iowa have played in the Rose Bowl since Michigan's last appearance, the Wolverines would get the invitation. Schembechler's battle now is to keep his team healthy and motivated for the next three weeks. After Illinois, Michigan faces Purdue and Minnesota - hardly glamour games. They are contests the Wolverines can certainly win, but a defeat in any of them could crush hopes of a Big Ten title. WITHOUT a loss, Michigan is where it wants to be concerning the record book. But what pleases Schembechler most is that his team has improved each week. In the Wolverines' 38-14 victory over Indiana, they pounced on the Hoosiers early. This week, the Michigan coach hopes to reduce penalties and turnovers. "If we can keep away from turnovers and play mistake-free ball in that regard, I think we'll be in good shape." That shape is molding into the form of a championship as the season spills into November, the time of year Schembechler likes. "That's when it gets nasty." Jonles namfed UCHA Player of the Week- Brad Jones was rewarded for an outstanding weekend by being named Player-of-the-Week in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. He will share the honors with Michigan State's Kevin Miller. The senior center scored eight points in the two games against Ohio State, in Michigan's 8-2 win Friday and 4-3 loss Saturday. Jones did most of his damage Friday, with two goals and four assists. Jones now has seven goals and nine assists, and his 16 points puts him fourth in the conference in scoring.(See related story, p.7) --SCOTT SHAFFER 4 I ice f JInaTcial Aid 2011 SAB Doily Photo by SCOTT LITUcHY Michigan middle linebacker Andy Moeller sacks Indiana quarterback Dave Kramme in the third quarter during Saturday's 38-14 Michigan victory. The 6-3, 289-pound junior will miss at least two weeks, Schembechler said, and will likely undergo arthroscopic surgery to explore the extent of the damage. Senior Jerry Quaerna is slated to replace Husar on Saturday against Illinois. * Schembechler was asked why Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon never pulled the tricks he is known for today when he was a college player at predominantly Mormon Brigham Young. "You can hide a lot of things in Provo (Utah)," Schembechler said. The victory partially atoned for the first two matches of the trip, losses at Western Michigan and Wisconsin. The first conference win comes as a relief to the Wolverines as they start the second half of their Big Ten schedule still hoping for a respectable finish. MARIE-ANN DAVIDSON led the way against the Wildcats with 20 kills as the Michigan hitters made the difference. Other outstanding players cited by coach Joyce Davis were Heather Olsen, Jane Hickman, and Lisa Vahi in the 15-12, 15-6, 6-15, 10-15, 15-10 nailbiter. The win came despite a season-high 18 service errors and poor passing. "We were very fortunate Northwestern didn' t play very well," said Davis. The Wildcats were "extremely tired," she said, due to a tough five-game match the night before against Michigan State. "They had to be physically and psychologically depressed." BUT THE Wolverines were still fresh, because their match the night before ended after a quick three games as they were dominated by Wisconsin 15-7, 15- 10, 15-11. Against the Badgers, Michigan was "absolutely pathetic," according to Davis. "We warmed up flatly, and we played flatly." The lone bright spots were Julie Marshall and Debi Bailey coming off the bench. "We did not get a good performance from the starters," Davis said. Against Western, the Wolverines put in a better performance, but couldn' t compete with the powerful Broncos. "We played with a good deal of intensity, but we were just overpowered by them," said Davis. 0 I 40 o iid~ oa4 4 GRIDDE PICKS On!- 99 A fter 4pm McD.L.T7, Big Mac,* and Quarter PounderĀ® with cheese, now only 99Q after Turn in your picks by midnight Friday to win a pizza from Pizza Bob's and an FTD bouquet. 1.
