Jets play winning
Toon; send Saints
inarching, 28-23

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Al
Toon, the NFL's leading receiver, caught three
touchdown passes from Ken O'Brien yesterday
as the New York Jets won their sixth straight
game, beating the New Orleans Saints, 28-23.
New York built a 28-6 lead through three
quarters and withstood New Orleans' 17-point
final period to raise its record to 7-1 in the AFC
East.
IGNORING A persistent rain, Toon, a
second-year wide receiver from Wisconsin,
scored on passes of 16, 62, and six yards. His
62-yarder with 19 seconds remaining in the first

half came on a good solo effort as Toon used
his size and speed to score.
O'Brien hit Toon on a slant-in at the New
Orleans 45, where Toon shook off attempted
tackles by Johnnie Poe and Brett Maxie. Toon
cut across the field, was caught by Dave
Waymer and eluded his hit at the Saints' 25.
He then sped down the right sideline into the
end zone.
Toon had six catches for 101 yards, giving
him 49 receptions this year. Freeman McNeil
scored on a one-yard run for New York's other
touchdown and the Jets defense dominated the

Saints most of the way. A one-yard touchdown
pass from Dave Wilson to John Tice with
10:19 remaining gave New Orleans its first
touchdown, thenWilson hit Tice again with a
29-yarder with 7:23 to go.
Morten Andersen kicked 26 and 53-yard field
goals following fumbles by O'Brien and
McNeil on New York's first two series of the
game. Andersen added a 28-yarder with 2:13
left, drawing the Saints within 28-23.
The six straight wins equalled a Jets club
record while the Saints fell to 3-5 in the NFC
West.

CHEERING

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -
Eric Dickerson continued on his
record rushing pace and threw his
first NFL touchdown pass, and
linebacker Mark Jerue scored on a
22-yard interception return
yesterday as the defense-minded Los
Angeles Rams beat the Atlanta
Falcons 14-7.
Dickerson gained 170 yards on
30 carries to surpass the 1,000-yard
mark as the Rams avenged a 26-14
loss in Atlanta two weeks ago and
took over first place in the NFC
West.
Los Angeles is 6-2, while both
the Falcons and the San Francisco
49ers are 5-2-1.
Dickerson built his NFL-leading
rushing yardage to 1,030 yards at
the midpoint of this season, putting
him ahead of his record-setting pace
of 1984, when his, set the league
mark with 2,105 yards.
Dickerson, in his fourth pro
season, had 925 yards rushing at the
midway point of the 1984
campaign.
After a scoreless first quarter,
Jerue put the Rams ahead to stay
when he picked off a pass by
Atlanta's David Archer and ran
untouched into the end zone 1:08
into the second period.
Cowboys 37, Cards 6
IRVING, Texas (AP) -
Quarterback Danny White, making
his first start in a month, threw two
touchdown passes and Herschel
Walker rushed for 120 yards and
scored twice Sunday to give the
Dallas Cowboys a 37-6 victory
over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Dallas increased its record, one-
half game behind Washington in
the NFC, while the Cardinals
dropped to 1-7.
White played only in the first
half, throwing a 36-yard touchdown
pass to rookie Mike Sherard and a
20-yard scoring toss to Tony Hill
as Dallas rolled to a 27-6 halftime
lead.
White aggravated a groin injury
and also suffered a lacerated chin, so
Dallas coach Tom Landry decided
not to risk him in the first half.
Walker, starting at tailback
becaiuse of Tony Dorsett's bruised
knee, scored on touchdown runs of
19 and four yards and got his first
100-yard rushing day in the NFL.
Broncos 20, Seahawks 13
DENVER (AP) - John
Elway passed for 321 yards,
including a 34-yard touchdown toss
to Vance Johnson on a flea-flicker
play, and a grudging Denver defense
yielded only a pair of field goals
until the closing minutes in the
Broncos' 20-13 victory over the
Seattle Seahawks yesterday.
Thetriumph boosted the
Broncos' record to 7-1 and gave
them a two-game lead in the AFC
Western Division over Seattle,
Kansas City and the Los Angeles
Raiders, all at 5-3.
The Bronco defense frustrated
Seattle quarterback Dave Krieg,
who completed only six of 16
passes for 26 yards and was sacked
five times for 47 yards in losses.
That resulted in a net passing
yardage of minus-21 yards for
Krieg before he left the game in the
fourth quarter.
