ARTS The Michigan Daily Monday, October 27, 1986 PageY Tricked but not treated By Kurt Serbus Peeeeuuuuuww! This one's a real stinker. Trick Or Treat is an amazingly dulI,cliched ripoff rushed out to capitalize on the current (or maybe not so current) controversy surrounding heavy metal. Eddie, a high school headbanger who constantly gets abused by the evil preppies in his class, finds his only solace in the music of Sammie Curr, an alumnus who made it big by howling about !teenage rebellion to kids who like to stick their fists up in the air a lot. When Sammie gets totally fried in a hotel room fire, Eddie is a broken man, until a local DJ hands him the only known copy of Sammie's last recording. It's a metal album, so naturally Eddie plays it backwards, but instead of the usual back-masked schmaltz Slike "This horse is Satan," he hears secret messages from Sammie telling him how to nail all those preppies, and his mom, too, while he's at it. Eddie dances to his tune for a while, but things really go too far when Curr pops right out of the speakers, back from the dead as a scary Electric Monster who shoots lightning bolts out of his guitar. It'll take more than Tipper Gore to Sstop this leather-clad rock and roll nightmare from the fiery pits of Hell itself! This tenseless, suspenseless, senseless crapola is redeemed in a few instances, however, by some good laughs- and some of them ,Records / The Michigan Daily? Carries Bloom County . .. THE BLOOM COUNTY? Lisa Orgolini and Marc Price (back, left) are terrorized by Tony Fields, who plays a heavy metal rock star who returns from the grave in 'Trick or Treat.' are even intentional. Here, I'll tell them to you, so you don't have to pay money to see them: During a news report on Sammie's death, they run some concert footage of him biting the head off of a snake and sucking up the spurting blood (Awesome!). In one scene, the Head Preppie Bitch puts Sammie's satanic tape in her Walkman and starts getting it on with this glow-in-the-dark mist that seeps out of the headphoncs and starts swirling around her body and stripping off her jumper. Then, right at the magic moment of climax, she opens her eyes, screams in horror, and the camera cuts to this humongous, twenty-foot demon looming over her, banging away with it's tongue hanging out. Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons, the subjects of most of the film's pre-release publicity, appear onscreen for a total of about three and a half minute each (Bummer, man!). There's some other funny jokes in Trick Or Treat, but certainly __ nothing worth cranking up theSad >Cmy jalopy for. As far as a good, solid scare goes, you're not going to find anything resembling that in this picture. Director Charles Martin T EC l 7 3 1 0 Smith has absolutely zero instincts CIEST in that area. And since Trick Or Treat is supposed to be a horror p rtnykn ks.. movie on some level, I guess that N xeinencsay makes it a miserable, rotten failure. SST Angst are at their best when their lyrics aren't too mired in their namesake, but the sound is a good deal closer. Confused? Well, San Francisco's Angst has continued their movement away yesteryear, atren whch to hold on last year's Lite Life, and this new LP is a. logical progression. But Mending Wall, like its predecessor, is also a very difficult record to get a grasp on. Perhaps it's intentional. .Categories just slip euive ques t o find a "label'" r the Angst sound. On one hand, it's tempting to say this trio is headed for a subdued pop groove; on the other hand they just a coarser strand of rock and roll with maybe a little surf thowntiat times, too. tle, the Angst sound is certainly an accessable type of thing. It's their lyrics which can use a little work here and there, as they are often exstremely melodramatic. The songs can become one tedius gripe after See RECORDS, Page 8 RACKHAM PRED OCT ORAL FELLOW SHIP S Applications are now available in your department.
