SPORTS OF THE DAILY Colts sign former 'M' safety Hicks INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Dwight Hicks, a former Michigan defensive back who has played in four NFL Pro Bowls, signed with the Indianapolis Colts yesterday, the NFL announced. Hicks was released by the San Francisco 49ers last summer after revealing he had used cocaine over the past five years. He had a tryout with the Colts Tuesday. To make room for Hicks on the roster, the Colts released wide receiver Wayne Capers on Thursday. General Manager Jim Irsay said the Colts were impressed with Hicks' tryout and said the club had thoroughly investigated his drug problem. Hicks, 30, became involved in a contract dispute with the 49ers before he was released. Red Sox 4, Mets I From Staff Reports The Boston Red Sox took a three game to two lead in the 1986 World Series last night by defeating the New York Mets 4-2 in front of a sell-out crowd in Boston's Fenway Park. Bruce Hurst scattered ten hits in going all the way to record his second World Series win. The Red Sox now travel to Shea Stadium for the sixth game on Saturday night. The Mets brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Len Dykstra, but Dykstra was called out on a swinging strike three. The Mets scored a run on a double by Mookie Wilson and a single by Rafael Santana. The Red Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Spike Owen delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Dave Henderson who tripled. Henderson reached third when his drive to right center got past Met right fielder Darryl Strawberry. In the next inning, Boston increased their lead to 2-0 when Bill Buckner limped home from second on Dwight Evans' single to center. The run was unearned, however, because Buckner had reached base on an error by Met shortstop Santana. Met starter Dwight Gooden, the losing pitcher in game two, was knocked out of the game in the fifth when the Red Sox padded their lead to 4-0. Jim Rice began the rally with a near home run that went as a triple to right field. DH Don Baylor followed with an RBI single to right. After Dwight Evans singled Gooden was pulled in favor of S4 Fernandez, who surrendered a ru= scoring double to Dave Henderson. Hurst, the winner of the first game of the series, didn't allow q run until Tim Teufel's solo blast jr the top of the eighth. w M' student places in triathlon Craig Ring, a Business School senior from Midland, finished 89th in a field of over 1,000 in the Bud Light Ironman Triathlon, held last Saturday in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
