Hockey vs. Ohio State Today and Tommorow, 7:30 Yost Ice Arena SPORTS Friday, October 24, 1986 Field Hockey vs. Michigan State Sunday, 10 a.m. Tartan Turf The Michigan Daily Page 11 Hoosiers hope to rebound against Blue (Continued from Page 1) may have caught the Big Ten off guard. However, Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler certainly ekpected it. "It was something that was logically going to happen," Schembechler said. "This is the third year of Bill Mallory and his staff being there; they're an excellent staff and know how to coach football and they're solid character people." a The result is a balanced offense that averages just under 400 yards a game and a defense that has allowed 17.6 points a game, down from 30.9 last season. Despite Indiana's improvement, no one is making them favorites against the undefeated Wolverines (6-0, 3-0 in the, Big Ten). "WE'RE FACING a football team that is very talented... Bo is loaded," Mallory said. "This is the best football team that I've seen him have." While the two gridiron pundits attempt to outcompliment one another, the Michigan defense will have it's hands full trying to stop Indiana's offense. Hoosier quarterbacks Brian Dewitz and Dave Kramme lead the offense that replaced Steve Bradley, Indiana's all-time leading passer, and share the job at quarterback with contrasting styles. The 5-11, 185 pound Dewitz runs the option with savvy, while Kramme is the better passer of the two. They have combined for over 1000 yards in the air and 235 on the ground, along with 10 touchdowns. The prospect of facing two quarterbacks, however, isn't making Michigan quiver. "IT'S NOT GOING to make that much difference," said Michigan assistant coach and defensive coordinator Gary Moeller. What may make a difference is the improved Indiana play on the offensive line and the improved rushing attack that has come with it. "They've had vast improvement in the offensive line," Schembechler said. "The offensive line is the key to their offense and they've done a great job there." DAMON SWEEZY, a football tike at 5-10, is a giant in the Hoosiers' ground game. The senior tailback leads the Hoosiers with 486 yards on 104 attempts(4.7 yards a carry) and six touchdowns. Although Indiana has been successful moving the ball, against Minnesota it couldn't move or score in critical situations. "I take nothing away from Minnesota, they're a good football team...but when I look at us, I was not pleased, particularly in the second half with our offense," Mallory said. "We had a couple of opportunities where we didn't do what we had to do to win the game." If the Hoosier offense doesn't do what it has to in order to beat Michigan, then the Hoosier defense will carry a heavy burden indeed. Michigan's offense is looking to bounce back after a sub-par performance against Iowa last Saturday. The strength of Indiana's defense lies in the linebacking and secondary, where the Hoosiers have their top five tacklers. Van Waiters, Indiana's top linebacker, leads the Hoosiers in solo tackles (33), is second in total tackles (56), and is the leader in sacks (5). Even though Michigan is coming off an emotional win and Indiana two heart-breaking losses, they are 15-point favorites against the Hoosiers. The Wolverines are as healthy as they have been since the opening game of the season, and their defense continues to improve. Indiana could prove to be tough, but it appears unlikely unexpected Michigan loss awaiting them tomorrow Bloomington. an is in *UommUm usummUEECOUPON *UUUEunnow with this entire ad $1.00 off any adult evening * S" admission, including Tues. -good thru 10/30/86 * s sssr==sssl=ss=ssss=r=ssssl=i sssss d HOME OF THE BRAVE DAILY TWIUIGH T SHSGOT BLUE VELVET SHOWS HAVE IT Call for show times ____AND M1tTums WELCOME r Daily Photo by PETER ROSS Wide receiver Greg McMurtry leaps over Iowa defensive back Kyle Crowe to catch a desperation pass as time expires in the first half last Saturday.
