They don't cater to the common denominator, and that's one reason why, you don't hear about them so much. However, there are parts of the Ann Arbor community that are looking for the new, the obscure and the ignored, and that's why Eyemediae (pro - nounced Eye-me-de-eye) is so important. Among the interesting things that have already occurred in that corner of town was the Monday evening reading by Kathy Acker. Ms. Acker is a writer of several novels, the most recent being Don Quixote. She has also written Blood and Guts in High School, Great Expectations, and My Death, My Life By Pier Paolo Pasolini. She read from he progress, E Senseless . In spite of her cold, Acker gave a iat dis - pretty scary sort of reading to the sold-out and fawning crowd, and stuck around afterwards to sign books and answer questions. She resides in London, and thinks the government there is miserable. She is thinking about moving to Paris. She loves her motorcycle. And she has a new tattoo, a bright blue leopard, to match the tigers that adorn each bicep. Since she was 19 and began writing seriously, she has concerned herself with expressing herself in new ways, and she uses many genres, especially from music and art. She is dif - ficult to categorize. Her work is difficult. The horrible soundtrack to Sid and Nancy makes me almost afraid to go see the movie. Presumably, it's a punk rock movie about punk rock. people, and it only follows that it should have a punk rock soundtrack. So why in hell is "Love Kills," the title track performed by Joe Strummer, a putrid little disco beat box number. You might argue that the movie's a love story, and therefore it's all right to have a couple of pop songs on the soundtrack- but an entire album's worth? Give me a break. The Pogue's "Haunted" is a really decent pop song worth putting on the album. But all the other cuts are just junk. Pray For Rain must have slept with someone important to get four awful songs on the soundtrack. They're the pits. And ex-Pistol Steve Jones is: even writing the crap. Come one Steve, let's hear some guitar' Johnny Rotten must be laughing his head off. Poor ol' Sid's probably puking in his grave. A couple of songs try to rock it up a bit, but only Strummer's "Dum Dum Club" is worthwhile: It's a bit confused sounding and it's got some street feeling to it, which seems to fit what ought to be the sound of the movie. The Circle Jerks' "Love Kills" is just plain bad. And why the hell is an old far like Gary Oldham doing Iggy's " Wanna Be Your Dog"? Why noi get an old fart like Iggy himself toa do the song? I don't want to even' tell you how siupid Oldham's version of Sid's "My Way" sounds.; So, if you're still at all tempted; to buy the soundtrack, you can pick; my copy out of the garbage next week. -Danny Plotnick Actually, we offer a choice ofjobs.
