The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 21, 1986 - Page 11 Blue Lines By PETE STEINERT To say that last weekend's series against Miami did not go as expected would be an understatement. Michigan came into tiny Goggin Arena expecting to take two games from the Redskins, picked to finish last in -the preseason coaches' poll, but Miami had different plans for its first home series. In front of two sell-out crowds, the Redskins snuck up on and swept Michigan by creating a lot of scoring opportunities and riding the hot goaltending Steve McKichan. The freshman earned CCHA player-of-the- week honors for his 77-save performance in the two game series. Miami, now 3-1, is off to its best start in its nine year history. The Redskins' three conference wins equal last year's total. "We were pretty high on ourselves," said Michigan defenseman Randy Kwong. "We thought we could come out with a couple of wins, but I think that overconfidence set us back." "They definitely caught us off guard," said a dejected Jeff Norton after Friday's 6-3 loss. This was clearly not the same team that the Wolverines defeated in all four of their meetings a year ago. The Red Wing lookalikes in their red and white uniforms outhustled and outplayed a bigger and supposedly better hockey team. It did not take the Redskins long to set the tone for the series. Just 50 seconds into Friday 11_ improvec t... night's game a wide open Jeff Sisto took a pass from Boyd Sutton in front of Michigan goalie, Warren Sharples, and gave them an early 1-0 lead. At that point Miami was on cloud nine, and it never came down. "They played with a lot more enthusiasm and intensity (than last year)," said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. "They got the goals they needed." In Friday's game Miami appeared to be playing at a level a notch higher than Michigan. While the Wolverines were as flat as the drive from Ann Arbor to Oxford, the Redskins were carrying the play throughout the game and causing fits for Michigan's defense with several three-on-two and two-on- one breaks. This was partially due to Michigan's failure to clear the puck out of its own zone. Meanwhile, the Wolverine offense sputtered. The majority of Michigan's shots were from just inside the blue line - shots that McKichan had little trouble handling. "Last year we had our defensemen pinching up at their blue line," said Miami head coach Bill Davidge.. "This year I've had them backing up, giving them the shot from the outside because now we have a 'tender that we can afford to give the shot to." The Wolverines played much better in Saturday's overtime loss, but the results were the same. Michigan fired 54 shots at McKichan, and the Strathroy, Ont. native I Redskins--.. ch "' by surprise saved all but three. "If they get goalkeeping like that, they'll be a good team," Berenson said. "If they wouldn't have got it, it could have been about an 8-2 game. The kid played well, and we didn't put our chances in." Although the Wolverines put more heat on the Redskins' goalie in the second game, the only line that consistently applied pressure was that of John Bjorkman, Brad Jones, and Brad McCaughey. Bjorkman and Jones accounted for two of Michigan's three goals. Bjorkman, replacing Jeff Urban in the lineup, scored his first goal in over a year. He was out most of last season because of illness. The other three lines had difficulty mustering any scoring threats. The second line of Billy Powers, Todd Brost, and Ryan Pardoski was very ineffective. For the Wolverines to win they must get more production out of their second and third lines. Brost, last year's leading scoring freshman, is yet to score his first goal. So now the Wolverines must regroup, and prepare for this weekend's home series against Ohio State. The Buckeyes are having problems of their own. They are in last place with a 0-3-1 record. "We're a young team," said Wolverine defenseman Myles O'Connor. "We're going to bounce back. We have to look at our mistakes and just make sure they don't happen again." Monte Robbins kneeled, waiting for the snap. Robbins put the ball down. Mike Gillette kicked it. It sailed through the uprights. MICHIGAN WINS! Thousands of Wolverine fans stormed the field. Why? They knew what was in Robbins' pocket. "He had the winners of next week's Griddes games," said one fan. "The guy is so paranoid, he carries them with him everywhere he goes. He even had them out there for the winning kick. "I would have had them, but somebody beat me out there." Then the scene turned ugly. All those fans shoving one another, just for that one slip of paper. Some people will stop at nothing to win a Pizza Bob's pizza and an FTD flower bouquet. 1.
