Field Hockey vs. Kent State Today, 7:30 p.m. Ferry Field SPORTS Tuesday, October 21, 1986 Hockey vs. Ohio State Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Yost Ice Arena The Michigan Daily Page 10 Cherful Ho not smelling Roses yet By MARK BOROWSKY It's not often that Bo Schembechler can be described as "jovial," but the Michigan head coach was just that yesterday in describing the state of his team and the Big Ten race yesterday in his weekly press luncheon. He joked about television timeouts, Big Ten night games, and Saturday's 20-17 win over Iowa. Schembechler couldn't seem to stop laughing at his own jokes. SCHEMBECHLER is happy for good reason. Michigan is undefeated, atop of the Big Ten following its first win over Iowa in three years, and his troops go to Bloomington this Saturday to face Indiana with few injuries. But like a good warrior, Schembechler never jokes when discussing the opposition and his team's chances for the conference title. "We're in a good position but we're not substantial. Not substantial at all," Schembechler said. "Not with Indiana, Minnesota, and that team at the end." "THAT TEAM" being, of course, Ohio State. And while that game may decide the Big Ten's entry in the Rose Bowl, Schembechler is hardly looking ahead. "At the end of six games we're right where we'd like to be, but we also understand there's a lot of pitfalls out there," he said. "One of them could be this week at Indiana." Indeed, a win at Bloomington won't come with its regular ease. The Hoosiers are 4-2, and their two losses have come by a total of four points to Ohio State and Minnesota. There isn't too much time to bask in the glory of Saturday's thriller. "WE'RE trying to get back to normal," Schembechler said, "and get ready to play this next game in Bloomington." Michigan comes out of the Iowa contest relatively unscathed. In fact, according to Schembechler, the worst injuries came as a result of the celebration after Mike Gillette's game-winning kick. Offensive tackle Mike Husar hurt his back, and defensive back Sean LaFountaine cracked his ribs. Meanwhile, defensive back Doug Mallory, who saw limited action against Iowa, will probably be at full strength to face his father Bill's Indiana squad. Mallory suffered an injured knee against Notre Dame in the first game of the season. ALTHOUGH Schembechler did not have to say much about team injuries, he did have a few things to say about Michigan's poor first half against the Hawkeyes, in which they found .t..« .t.. .,.t. A 1A "We turned the ball over, missed assignments, (had) three illegal procedures on three different guys. two holding calls. Whatever you want, we did it." And what exactly did Schembechler say during halftime? "I WASN'T calm," Schembechler said. "If I got enthusiastic and got after them a little bit, maybe they relaxed a little bit more. They're used to that environment." How well the Wolverines adjust to the environment of Bloomington remains to be seen. Considered a legitimate doormat before the season, Indiana has surprised everyone by being competitive. Everyone, that is, . except for Schembechler. "Teams (in the Big Ten) that we anticipated to be good have been pretty good," he said. "The only one I'm surprised that hasn't come on stronger is Wisconsin(2-5)." 4 4 HOW FAR WILL YOUR TALENT TAKE YOU? Apply for the TIME College Achievement Awards and find out.
