It's time to show their scalps on the _ _ t. ;_ : d By DARREN JASEY It's showtime in Oxford, Oh. this weekend. Time for Miami's second-year head coach Bill Davidge to showcase his ten prize recruits in front of the home folks at Goggin Ice Arena. Sound familiar, doesn't it? LAST FRIDAY night it was Michigan's head man Red Berenson showing off ten young talents of his own in front of a friendly home crowd at Yost Ice Arena. Now Berenson's troops will merely serve ,as a measuring stick for the Redskin faithful when judging their recruits. "We want to do well in front of ,our home crowd," said Davidge. "It's the home opener and we want to get off to a good start where we "Michigan's recruiting class is one of the best in the country. I guess we'll find out how good ours is in the game." THE WOLVERINES and Redskins share 1-1 records after splitting a pair with top-notch CCHA opponents in last weekend's openers. The Redskins earned their record on the road at Western Michigan, while Michigan needed a home win to offset its road loss at Bowling Green. With the splits, both Michigan and Miami, which finished 8th and 9th respectively in the CCHA last season, have shown signs of improving. "Teams 'like Michigan and Miami have improved more than others simply because the other teams are already good," said Berenson. With the weaker sisters tightening up the loose ends, Berenson believes easy wins are harder to earn in the CCHA. "THEY'LL BE tough," said Berenson of Miami (3-27-2 last season). "They are coming off of a good weekend against Western. They'll be putting on a show at home. They'll be very tough to beat." Gone from last year's Redskin team is 50-point scorer Todd Channel, but Davidge said that his club is deeper and more balanced this year. "We won't rely on one superscorer," he said. The offensive duo of Mike Orn and Greg Dornbach are the leaders of Miami's attack. The juniors combined for 63 points last year and last week Dornbach contributed a goal and two assists. Senior center Mike Martinec had the same numbers, tying him with Dornbach for the Redskins' scoring lead. IF LAST week's games indicated future prospects, these three freshmen are notable: left winger Tom Neziol, defenseman Steve McGrinder and goaltender Stephen McKichan. Davidge has been giving McKichan a good long look in goal despite the presence of returning starter Brent Smith. McKichan started in Friday night's 6-1 loss but Davidge said he played well and will likely start one of the games against Michigan. The senior Smith, who was in net for Miami's 6-5 victory last Saturday, will start the other game. Neziol netted a goal and an assist in his first series. Said Davidge, "he has the ability to control the pace of the game." MCGRINDER is considered Miami's best recruit. In fact, Davidge said he may be his best defenseman. The Waterloo, Ont. native tallied one goal in his debut last week. Four returning lettermen and two other freshmen join McGrinder on defense. Senior Mike Macoun should provide the most help at that "(Miami) will be tough. They are com- ing off of a ood weekend against Wes- tern. They'll be put- ting on a show at home. They'll be very tough to beat." - Red Berenson SERVE IN APPALACHIA Single Catholic Men Serving Others Your practical help to the elderly, handicapped and poor in Appalachia can make a difference. With ten freshmen added to a team that won only three conference games last year, Miami is having trouble getting respect. In the CCHA coaches poll, it was a consensus last-place pick. "LAST YEAR doesn't mean anything," said Berenson, whose team compiled a 4-0 record against the Redskins last year. According to Berenson these are important games in Michigan's quest to finish above .500. "We can't have to score six goals a game. to win," said the Michigan coach, eluding to last week's Bowling Green series. He also mentioned that Michigan has only won seven road games in the last two years. , That makes it nearly impossible for a team to finish .500. According to Berenson- Michigan will stick with the same, lineups they used against BowlinQ Green. The Brad Jones-Bract McCaughey-Ryan Pardoski line was the most effective. The three combined for 10 points 'last weekend. The goaltending situation looks unchanged also. Warren Sharples and Glen Neary are expected to share the duties.
