Volleyball vs. Iowa Friday, 7:30 IM Building SPORTS Wednesday, October 15, 1986 Volleyball vs Minnesota Saturday, 7:30 IM Building The Michigan Daily Page 9 Heren aims to shoot down Hawks By PHIL NUSSEL The opening kickoff is more than 100 hours away, but for Michigan outside linebacker Dieter Heren, Saturday's clash with Iowa is the only thing to think about. It's easy to see why. FOR HEREN and 14 other Wolverines in their last year of eligibility, this game between the two undefeated Big Ten powers could make or break their college football goal - a trip to Pasadena. Most of them were redshirt freshmen when Michigan made its last trip there in 1983. Heren, becoming an inspirational leader on the resurgent '86 Michigan defense, will have to make big plays on the Hawkeyes as he did last week against Michigan State. The big hits are making people compare this year's defense to last year's. "I don't think it's suddenly like 1985 again," said Heren. "Personally, I think each week we've been improving. I think it takes time to gel a defense and we're still not there yet." THIS WEEK, though, 1985 has more significance for Wolverines. Their last loss was exactly one year ago - at Iowa on a last-second Rob Houghtlin field goal. "Yeah, shoot, I remember that," Heren said. "We were playing for No. 1. It was a battle to the very end. The defense didn't give up a touchdown, but they won with four field goals. They got the points. "That was a tough defeat. Any time you get beat, it's tough around here, especially last year when we had such a good season." HEREN WON the defensive hustler honors in that game. He was on the field for the game- winning kick. "It hurt to watch the ball go through the goalposts," the Fort Wayne, Ind. native said. "I tried (to block it), but they had me blocked off. They had good protection on that field goal and it went right through." Two games later, Heren finally got his blocked field goal. He deflected Illinois place kicker Chris White's final field goal to save a 3- 3 tie in Champaign. While his heroics last year were on special teams, Heren's fame this season is in the starting lineup. Tim Schulte originally started at the linebacking spot, but Heren took it over in the third game against Florida State. Now, three weeks later, Heren is fourth on the team in tackles with 30. He also has two sacks and a fumble recovery. ALL THIS has made head coach Bo Schembechler a happy man. "Dieter Heren has established himself as a pretty good linebacker now," the boss said. "He's made some good plays for us." Schembechler recruited Heren to play safety, which he did for two seasons. He saw action in 10 games during the disastrous 6-6 '84 season. In the off season, Heren kept growing to the point where the coaches had to move him to outside linebacker. "The hardest part (in the move) was learning the techniques," Heren said. "They are totally different. It's different in the way you take on blockers." The coaches threw him right into action in the first game against Notre Dame, starting him in place of the injured Jeff Akers. He played backup the rest of the year until missing Minnesota and Ohio State with a knee injury. The recovery was slow, but he did see a little time in the Fiesta Bowl. Now at 6-3, 219-pounds, Heren likes his position. "I just like playing football," Heren said. "I don't care where it is on the field. (Outside linebacker) is a fun position because it challenges you more on the run, but not as much on the pass. "I'm glad things turned out the way they did when I moved. I think I've learned a lot more-about the defense now after the switch. I pretty much know now what goes on at every position." But Heren isn't thinking about position changes anymore. He's thinking about Iowa...and remem - bering. Sources who wish to remain anonymous have informed Griddes $ that Fry isn't really the poor coach he appears to be in every nationally broadcasted game in which Iowa plays - he's just concerned about winning Griddes. That explains why a year ago Fry stood on the sidelines in apparent shock as Michigan State ran draw play after draw play for big chunks of yardage, and why this year State was able to blitz Iowa with an incredible aerial attack - Fry's not really a bad coach, he just had the Spartans in Griddes. But those Hawkeye players came back to win on both occasions, and Fry lost Griddes by a game each time. Poor Hayden, he's got the Wolverines this week.
