Page 8 --The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 14, 1986 SPOR TS OF THE DAIL Y Error-prone spikers lose two CCHA Scorecard By ADAM BENSON The Michigan volleyball team suffered its toughest weekend of the season, losing road games to Indiana and Ohio State last weekend. Losses always hurt, but the way the Wolverines lost was the most upsetting aspect of Michigan's road trip to Bloomington and Columbus. Michigan coach Joyce Davis had few positive things to say about the Indiana defeat, in which Michigan. lost in three straight, 15-6, 15- 13,15-11. "W E WERE not even competitive in the warm-up," said Davis. "We were intimadated totally. Indiana did not do one thing better than we did. They didn't pass, hit, or block better than us. But when time came to score points, they did it." Indiana's middle hitters dominated Michigan, notching 14 kills compared to six for the Wolverines. Outside hitter Heather Olson put forth the best performance of any Wolverine, but as a team, Michigan commited many unforced errors. Olson was the only Michigan player to have an attack percentage over .200. Against the struggling Buckeyes, the Wolverines did no better. Ohio State took a 6-0 lead in the first game and forced Michigan to play catch-up the entire match. Michigan was able to come back in the second game, but Ohio State once again compiled an early lead in the third game. From that point, the Wolverines were never in the match. They ended up losing 15-12, 9-15, 15-7, 15-1. Davis could only say that the team "played well enough not to be embarassed. The game featured some terrific long rallies, and we were more competitive against OSU, but we should have had a closer match." "We made stupid mental mistakes," she added. "We had Ohio State on a weekend when they were not playing their best ball. Unfortunately, we were worse than thev were." Stickers drop two The field hockey team suffered perhaps its worst weekend of the season last Saturday and Sunday. The Wolverines saw their record drop to 7-7-1, (1-4-1 in the Big Ten) after losing back-to-back contests to Purdue and Iowa. Though Michigan is considered to be one of the most improved teams in the conference, the Wolverines managed to score only a single goal over the weekend. Senior Jane Nixon had the lone goal in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Iowa. Michigan led Iowa, 1-0, at halftime, but the Hawkeyes scored three quick goals in the middle of the second half to put it away. Purdue then shut out the Wolverines, 4-0, in Sunday's contest. Michigan's offense was certainly lagging as the Wolverines could manage only eight shots on goal for the weekend. Michigan goalie Maryann Bell turned away 23 shots over the weekend. The Wolverines will go on the road to face Eastern Michigan Wednesday and Michigan State Sunday. - BILL ZOLLA CCHA Stayd is (Overall) W L. (AP) - Coach Mike Ditka said yesterday the Chicago Bears have a legitimate interest in quarterback Doug Flutie. "Something should happen soon, I can't say anymore than that," said Ditka. "I'm interested in what he accomplished.- He intrigues me." D I T K A' S remark of something happening soon related to the NFL trading deadline this afternoon. The Los Angeles Rams own the rights to Flutie and they want a second-round draft choice for the 5- foot-9, 1984 Heisman Trophy winner who last year played in the United States Football League, which is not operating this year. Bears general manager Jerry Vainisi reportedly has offered the Rams a sixth-round choice for Flutie. VAINISI said he has not talked to Flutie but has been in contact with Bob Woolf, Flutie's agent. Woolf has said that Flutie is honored that last year's Super Bowl champs are interested in him. If the Bears were to get the rights to Flutie, their plans would be to sign him to a 1987 contract. But they also would have him available this season in case of an emergency. An emergency is always possible, especially with the in-and- out injury status of starting quarterback Jim McMahon. The backup quarterbacks are Steve Fuller and Mike Tomczak. GRIDDE PICKS. Dave White turned in a 17-2-1 record to take Griddes in a week that saw most competitors limp in around the .500 mark.
