While Van Halen, Bob Dy- lan/Tom Petty and ZZ Top along with the Am- nesty International Tour went the stadium route the vast majority of acts opted for smaller are- nas, sometimes playing several dates in one city, as did Bob Seger. On May 18, a 19-year-old fan was murdered at a concert in Takoma, Washington, at the beginning of Judas Priest's nationwide tour. Earlier in the evening, concertgoers overturned a police car and injured a policeman. Less than a month later, a fan was killed at a Los Angeles concert headlined by Ozzy Osbourne. The 22-year-old jumped or fell to his death during the opening gig by the speed- metal band Metallica. Ten other fans were treated for injuries and drug overdoses. Shortly after the Judas Priest incident in Washington, a New England concert promoter instituted a sum- mer-long ban on heavy metal shows after fans destroyed hundreds of seats at a Judas concert in Connecticut. New Jersey promoter John Scher says. "The heavy metal acts have got to take control of the situation. If things start to get really nasty at a concert, artists are going to have to stop the show and talk to the audience." * Ampersand Complete the official entry form or, on a plain piece of 3" X 5" paper, print your name, permanent address, zip code and the name of your school.
