Francis Ford Coppola's latest
creation, Peggy Sue Got
Married not only reaffirms
Coppola as an imaginative and
innovative filmaker, but also shows
that he can direct a film that is both
warm and hilarious. This should
give him his first commercial
success in a number of years.
Coppola finally made a film
about everyone's secret fantasy: to
go back in time and find out what
life would be like if different
decisions were made. Kathleen
Turner is the lucky person who
mysteriously goes from a 25 year
class reunion back to 1960. Turner
flawlessly accomplishes the
difficult task of playing a teenager,
even though she appears to be
forty-three years old. In so doing,,
she helps create one of the funniesta
movies of the year.,
This film will obviously be
compared to the hit movie of last
summer, Back to the Future.
However Coppola's film is different
because Kathleen Turner relives her
own past as opposed to Michael J.
Fox who manipulates events in

someone else's past..
At the beginning of the film,
Turner is a middle-aged mother
having marital problems with
Nicholas Cage (Valley Girl and
Cotton Club), an obnoxious
appliance salesman. Suddenly, she
finds herself back at the time when
she began to get seriously involved
with her husband-to-be. However,
since she "remembers" what will
happen in the next 26 years, she
realizes how absurd most people
are when they are in high -school.
Nicholas Cage is no exception
which brings about her dilemma:
Peggy Sue got married once, will
she do it again?
What makes this film funny is
that everyone sees this middle-aged
Turner as a teen-ager, even though
she acts with forty years of
experience. For instance, what
little importance her high school
classes once had is now completely
gone. Turner states, "Algebra is
useless, I speak from experience".
Coppola does not fail to use
Turner's 26 years of perspective as a
comic vehicle: she no longer has
to study for an office job, all she
has to do is to invent panty-hose.
