The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 3, 1986-- Page 11 Improved Stickers face Big Ten rivals By AL HEDBLAD Perennial field hockey heavyweight Northwestern storms into Ann Arbor Sunday to take on Michigan in a 10 a.m. game at Tartan Turf. For the first time in several years, it appears that the Wolverines can compete with the Wildcats. "Northwestern is beatable," said assistant coach Andrea Wickerham. "They are similar to Iowa in that they have the potential to play a high-scoring game. But they don't always play to their capabilities." IN OTHER words, according to Wickerham, Northwestern plays "only enough to win. If we can stay in the game early, we can beat them." But the Wolverines cannot concern themselves with the Wildcats just yet, because Michigan has to face Ohio State tonight. Michigan has played the Buckeyes twice, beating them 2-0 prior to last week's 2-2 tie. Beating Ohio State would be important in that it would give needed momentum going into Sunday's game against Northwestern. A win Sunday would also be the high point so far of a remarkable turnaround for the Wolverines. REBOUNDING from an abysmal 1985 season in which Michigan won once in seventeen tries, the Wolverines are 6-4-1. While recruiting has strengthened this year's team, Wickerham gives most of the credit for the Wolverines' turnaround to extensive off- season conditioning. "Returning players took the initiative to work out with weights, run, and practice their stickwork on their own," said Wickerham. In addition, most returning players trained for four weeks in the U.S. Olympic Developmental System, which Wickerham calls a "feeder system" for the U.S. Olympic Team. The result 'is a Wolverine field hockey team that can compete with its Big Ten opponents, including Northwestern and Ohio State. Ohio State coach Harriet Reynolds said she expects a "good game" from Michigan. The Wolverines do not intend to disappoint her. Ailing 'By JIM DOWNEY The cross-country teams are set to compete in today's Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. Although both squads are battling injury problems, each is confident that it can finish high in the Invite. The men enter the meet coming off a second-place finish at the Michigan Inter-Collegiate Championships, held two weeks ago in Ypsilanti. Without the services of freshmen Tim Fraleigh and Doug McKibbon(whom coach Ron Warhurst elected to sit out) and the injured Marty Newingham, the result was nevertheless successful. Host Eastern Michigan won the meet. THE WOMEN head to Columbus fresh off the heels of their second-place place finish at last week's Western Ontario Invitational. Penn State, a national cross-country power the past few seasons, took first place. However, the Wolverines ran without seniors Kelli Bert and Melissa Thompson, who were sidelined by injury and sickness, respectively. The OSU Invitational will provide both teams an opportunity to size up some of its Big Ten competition. Along with the host Buckeyes, Purdue and Northwestern will run. "Northwestern finished second in the conference last year, and this will allow us to see how we match up," said women's coach Sue Parks. Warhurst isn't quite so sure what will greet him in Columbus. "The teams change around so much from year to year, it's really hard to tell what to expect," he said. In addition, Ohio State is the site of the Big Ten Championships this season. Parks said the Wolverines welcome "the chance to try out the course." WARHURST expects a typically strong performance from senior All-American Chris Brewster. Joe Schmidt, John Scherer, and freshman Brad Barquist are also counted on to score. The situation is similar to the one two weeks ago- in Ypsilanti. Fraleigh and McKibbon are not running, and Newingham is still hampered by injuries. The situation is the same for the women. With Bert out and Thompson's status in question,. freshman Mindy Rowand will be counted on to post scoring times. Therefore, today's meet gives both teams another chance to: compete without all of their top runners. harriers trek to OSU f Brewster ... setting the pace ,Doran blast powers Astros over Giants SAN FRANCISCO (AP)- Bill Doran led off the 10th inning with a solo homer to give Houston a 2-1 victory yesterday over the San Fransisco Giants in a game that saw the Astros' Mike Scott make a bid for his second straight no- hitter. Will Clark ended Scott's no-hit bid with a lead-off double in the seventh inning and scored on Candy Maldonado's double, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. SCOTT HAD a perfect game for five and one third innings on the heels of his no-hit victory over the Giants Sept. 25 at Houston that clinched the NL West division for the Astros. Scott finished with eight strikeouts and a season total of 306, making him only the fourth National League pitcher to surpass 300 strikeouts. First they try to start a new bowl game, and instead of putting it in the land of sand and sun, they put it in the land of snow and slush. Then, instead of inviting good teams, they invited a very mediocre local team to the initial Cherry Bowl of two years ago - Michigan State. "They've got fan appeal," said the organizers before the game. When enough people didn't show up for that game, organizers decided the next year to invite two teams from out of state. "The improved teams will increase attendance," said organizers. Wrong again. The Cherry Bowl is going broke. The funny thing about the former Griddes organizers is that they insisted on making all the same mistakes the Cherry Bowl organizers did - local teams abound, and they just loved including mediocre (or worse) teams, i.e. the Sam Houston State- Texas Southern matchup listed below. Guess what? Because of mismanagement, Griddes is going broke too. Corporate sponsors have refused to help, and our only hope is with you, the reader. If we can receive enough entries by tonight, an anonymous donor has agreed to sponsor Griddes. Save Griddes and win a free pizza from Pizza Bob's by getting your entry in now at 420 Maynard. Doran then connected for his sixth homer off reliever Jeff Robinson, 6-3. Matt Keough, 5-4, who worked out of the ninth inning jam was the winner and Dave Smith worked the 10th for his 33rd save.
