Page 10- - The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 3, 1986 4 Schembechier shoots for 200th win (Continued from Page 1) against Wyoming. Of Hilles' 22 original starters, 12 E have suffered injuries. However, most of them, will return against Michigan, including All-Big Ten tailback Lary Emery (1,113 yards in '85). Vith that in mind, Schembechler is not taking the Badgers lightly. "WE'RE NOT going to play the, same Wisconsin team that played in the first four games," Schembechler said. "You can forget that. It's a talented football team and whoever plays for them will be playing extremely hard. We expect a really close game and I'm sure that is what is going to happen." Schembechler, who is going for his 200th career coaching victory, is 14-1 against the Badgers. That one loss came in 1981 when Wisconsin upset the number one- ranked Wolverines 21-14 - in Madison. TO CREATE an upset this year, Hilles will have to get his offense untracked. Quarterback Mike Howard completed 44 of 86 passes for 472 yards and four touchdowns in the first four games. He also tossed five interceptions. Hilles said he will call on backup Bud Keyes if Howard is ineffective. While Emery's return will help, the Badgers will still miss fullback Joe Armentrout's blocking. Up front, the offensive line has missed up to four starters at a time. Wisconsin's 'top blocker, guard Glen Derby, is expected to play. Reggie Tompkins and Freddy Bobo are the leading wideouts, but both played hurt in the early going. The two so far have 17 catches for 268 yards and four touchdowns. THE OUTLOOK is brighter for the Badger defense, which features standout outside linebackers Rick "Thunder" Graf and Tim "Lightning" Jordan. Both seniors have started since their freshman years. Like most of the starters, they have been in and out of the lineup this year with injuries, but they will play tomorrow. The Badgers are solid at inside linebacker with leading tacklers Michael Reid (45 tackles) and Michael Boykins (29 tackles). Defensive tackle Jim Kmet (6-3, 253-pounds) returns from the injury list to bolster the front line. Mr. Everything cornerback Nate Odoms highlights the secondary with six interceptions, but that's not all he can do. The 5- 10, 190-pounder is also a leading punt and kickoff returner. He averages 95 all-purpose yards a game. "We've had to curtail him a little," Hilles said. "We're putting him in the position where he'll never be out of the game." Place kicker Todd Gregoire could be Wisconsin's top offensive threat. He is the top kicker in Badger history, having made 50 of 51 PAT's and 39 field goals in his career. But his range is limited: he is 6-for-15 in attempts over 40 yards. EVEN WITH casualty list disappointing start, the and Hilles long the says is. They have good wide receivers and (Howard) has looked good at times. This team has more ability than what they've shown on the score and they have a defense that is going to keep them in a lot of football games." Michigan has some injury problems of its own. Split end Paul Jokisch and leading rusher Jamie Morris are both "doubtful" according to Schembechler. Morris is resting a bruised knee and NCAA hurdling champ Thomas Wilcher will replace him. Wilcher scored the winning touchdown against Florida State last week. his team can still be a force. "We're going to put those first four games behind us," he said. "It's whole new season now, going into the Big Ten. All our energy is being put together to give Michigan a good game. "I've been around football for a long time, and I don't think I could have misjudged this team's talent. I've been trying to get the players to understand why things are breaking down. It's a confidence thing we have to overcome." Michigan defensive coordinator Gary Moeller, whose defense will be missing safety Tony Gant (hip pointer), is surprised by the Badgers' slow start as. "You know, I really don't know why they're messing up," he said. "I don't know what their problem 24 HR.
