Hockey Blue-White Intrasquad Scrimmage Tonight, 7:30 Yost Ice Arena SPORTS Men's Basketball Season Ticket Applications Today, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Athletic Ticket Office The Michigan Doily Red Friday, October 3, 1986 to showcase new Page~ Blue recruits By DARREN JASEY Excited fans will tell you the 1986-87 Michigan hockey season opens tonight at Yost Ice Arena. Well, not quite. The season actually starts next Friday night at Yost when pre-season Central Collegiate Hockey Association favorite Bowling Green comes to town. IT'S EASY to get excited because tonight's, annual Blue- White intrasquad scrimmage will be the first action for a highly-touted recruiting class. As a result, some of the Wolverines will be looking to get acquainted with each other. "I think you'll see players that are for the most part anxious to get out in a game," said third-year head coach Red Berenson, who nabbed four of his 11 freshmen from the Calgary, Alberta area. The coach believes that the newcomers will improve a team that lost six seniors. "I've been frustrated that we didn't do better last year," said Berenson. "I think we played better than our record showed, (but) when a team loses so long they get used to losing, and I think some of the players that were, for example, seniors in the last two years never played on a .500 team, and I don't know if they really expected to. "I THINK we are at the turning point where we are going to change all that this year. There will be better expectations from our players and from myself. . .we're expecting to win." Berenson, who coached the team through a week of practice in foggy Yost Arena, is hoping to get a clear view of both the newcomers and veterans tonight. "How we fit those freshmen into the lines is important because they are all new to everyone," said Berenson, whose squad was 12-26 last season. "(We need) the kids to fit in with the veteran players, and for them to realize what they can do to help the team, and for the team to play like a team and not like a bunch of individuals." THE SCRIMMAGE is considered significant by the players and the coaches. The Wolverines have not played in any exhibitions and Berenson feels that his young Wolverine squad needs a real game workout. "I think practices are very productive, but on the other hand sg g ll S osBefore GEOWA E FUWW1ES Ck 1M 214 S. "Some kids play better in a game than they do in practice." Berenson and his staff will concentrate more on evaluating the technical aspects of the team's play rather than simply deciding victims of the final cuts. "I'm more interested in the type of hockey that we are playing as far as our smart hockey - how we are playing without the puck and how we are playing with the puck," said the Michigan coach. "We are going to make mistakes and we are going to learn from' them." The game starts at 7:30 p.m and admission is $1. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC PRESENTS SYMPHONY BAND/CONCERT BAND H. WoolIridge signed by Nets for draft picks . r °i ,.a* a [q i GORGEKERASOTES COMORVATK)N4 I h ' vw w.r wa r s A w EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Free-agent forward Orlando Woolridge, the Chicago Bulls' leading scorer last season, was acquired by the New Jersey Nets yesterday for several top draft choices. The Nets signed the five-year NBA veteran to an offer sheet after the Bulls gave up their right of first refusal in exchange for a first-round draft choice in 1987 and second-round draft picks in 1988 and 1990. WOOLRIDGE'S five-year contract reportedly is worth $4.5 million. "My number-one concern was a winning cause," saidWoolridge at a news .conference. "I always thought this team had a lot of talent, but felt they were one or two players ,away. My goal is to fit in one of the spots missing." Woolridge said he does not leave Chicago with animosity, though he was disturbed at troubles he had with the "management there last season THE MUSICAL THEATR ANE Book and Lyrics by Garry Trudeau 4 r 4 M4 . ' when he said he injured his wrist and team doctors disagreed. OVER MANAGEMENT objections, Woolridge sat out two mid-season games. In addition, the 6-foot-9 Woolridge said, "For five years, we had had talented ball clubs but we didn't get the wins we wanted." Then there was the money. "IN LOOKING at what the other guys (playing small forward) were making, I felt I wasn't paid what I should have been paid.. When you're scoring 20 to 30 points night in, night out, I felt I should be getting paid what they were, "he said. Last season, Woolridge scored 1,448 points. He averaged 20.7 points per game, ranking 19th in the league. "We are extremely happy to have Orlando as a member of the New Jersey Nets," said coach Dave Wohl, who did not attend the conference. "He's a tremendous addition for us up front and will give us some added scoring punch."
