It's time for the party to begin. Michigan takes its 3-0 record into Madison this weekend to start tackling the Big Ten schedule. The real season is here. Sure, it's great to be undefeated. The Wolverines are still candidates for a national championship. But it makes no difference for the team's more pressing goal - the Big Ten title and an invitation to the Rose Bowl. While people argue that Michigan's defense isn't as solid as once thought and that its special teams aren't so special, the Wolverines stick to preparing for the conference battle. They're undefeated, and that's all that really matters. Playing against teams it's never played before is not always the best indication of how well a team will fare in its own conference. And although Bo Schembechler's squad has not been as sharp as your No. 2 pencil, it's still the top candidate to go to Pasadena. The Big Ten just isn't that strong this year. The golden boy quarterbacks arouid the league are gone, and most teams are rebuilding. Michigan State is a legitimate contender. Lorenzo Wlhite is the most dangerous player in the league, if not the NCAA. Averaging 133 yards in his first This weekend's contest against Iowa should show whether MSU is a bonafide threat or just another prank call. Michigan has the advantage of playing both teams in Ann Arbor. It will be a crucial homestand, but hey, let's not kid ourselves. The Wolverines lose to the Spartans only once every seven years - they're not due for a while. BARB'S a 12-10 loss and no roses. Iowa is 3-0 currently after beating Iowa State, Northern Illinois, and UTEP, some teams that might give Pioneer High School a run for its money. The Hawkeyes have cleaned their opponents' clocks, but heading into East Lansing, time may have run out for their undefeated record. Vlasic will miss the game and possibly more with a deeply- bruised throwing arm. His absence puts Iowa in a pickle. Ohio State has to be considered a challenger, despite its 2-2 record. The Buckeyes lost to Alabama and Washington - two top 20 teams. They just edged Colorado, but clobbered Utah, 64-6. But non-conference records don't tell all. OSU shares with MSU the advantage of the schedule- makers' gift. "They sit there in the catbird seat since they're not going to play each other," Schembechler said. "That's a hell of an advantage." The surprise team so far has been Indiana. The Hoosiers are 3-0, including a 52-29 drowning of Navy. They're second in the Big Ten behind Iowa in total offense. With Northwestern on the schedule this weekend, Indiana should be 4-0 after Saturday. But in the end, Indiana will still have basketball. The gridiron Hoosiers will share the middle of the ladder with Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Despite not having to play Michigan, Northwestern should find its familiar place at the bottom rung. The Boilermakers struggle on offense, but that's no fault of quarterback Jeff George. (Or is it George Jeff?) The freshman leads the conference's signal callers in total offense. Lack of a sufficient, ground game keeps the Boilermakers out of the running, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota have been pummeled in the non-conference season, but it is no indication of how they'll fare in the Big Ten. They've lost to tough teams. They will win some games, but not enough to worry about making New Year's plans. With the exhibition season over, Michigan is where it wants to be - relatively healthy an4 undefeated. The Wolverines know the schedule is ' no cakewalk, but they'll save room for dessert. Let the party begin. I BABRBS By Barb McQuade : WRAP- three games, the junior runningback can break a big run any time he's on the field. Quarterback Dave Yarema has been throwing well - he's currently rated second in the nation in passing efficiency behind Iowa's Mark Vlasic. The 2-1 Spartans lost, 20-17, to Arizona State on the road, but bumped off the Fighting Irish, 20- 15, and Western Michigan, 45-10. And the revenge factor has got to count for something against last year's Big Ten champion, Iowa. The Hawkeyes have beaten Michigan the last two years in Iowa City. Bo won't forget quickly. Iowa silenced the Wolverines, 26-0 in Michigan's 6-6 season in 1985.
