Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 30, 1986 - Bo:.2 By PHIL NUSSEL Nostalgia highlighted Bo Schembechler's- weekly press luncheon yesterday as the veteran Michigan coach began preparations for Saturday's Big Ten opener at Wisconsin. A Wolverine win there will mark Schembechler's 200th career coaching victory. Schembechler, 199-55-7 in 23 seasons as a head coach, is the winningest active Division I-A coach. Only eight coaches in I-A and 14 coaches in all divisions have won 200 or more games. He ,needs six wins to pass Fielding H. Yost to become the winningest ,coach in Michigan history. THE VETERAN Michigan boss, however, took it all in stride. "It just means I've been a head coach for a long time," Schembechler said. "That's all there is to it. The one thing I don't want to do is feel old, and the only accomplishment I can see in winning 200 is that I've lasted a 00 victories is nothing special long, long time. I don't want people to think it's the end of the line." Schembechler spent 10 years as an assistant at Bowling Green, Northwestern, and Ohio State. He worked with two coaching legends - Ara Parseghian at Northwestern and Woody Hayes at Ohio State. IN 1963 he took over the head duties at Miami, where he chalked up a 40-17-3 mark. He came to Michigan in 1969 and is 159-38-4 since. "I've never had a coaching job I didn't enjoy," he said. "I was never itchy (to move on). I just figured I'd make it. Nobody ever offered me a (head coaching) job until Miami did, and that made me grateful to that school. "When I came to Michigan, I wasn't the pinacle of financial success. I made $21,000 a year and I didn't have a television show. I was working like the guy in the street." Schembechler received his biggest raise ten years ago when Texas A&M recruited him to coach there. He is now one of the nation's highest-paid coaches with a $108,102 salary. Blue Banter s Schembechler delivered a stinging criticism yesterday of the officiating during the Florida State game. "I don't care about any of those penalties on Saturday, because none of them were penalties. What do you think of that? "They called Kolesar for offensive pass interference and he never touched the guy. They called Jumbo Elliott for holding on a cutoff block on the backside when he was on the ground. "It was a conspiracy, it really was." Saturday's split officiating crew had Southern Independent referees, a group which only works Florida State, Miami (Fla.), and South Carolina games. "Most of those guys are rejects from some place else anyway," Schembechler said, grinning. "I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, because I don't have to see those guys again. "I've seen some officiating in my day, but- that was unbelieveable." " Michigan is healing, finally. Offensive tackle Jerry Quaerna and safety Doug Mallory will begin working out this week. Split end Paul Jokisch is expected to return to the lineup against Wisconsin. Jamie Morris missed practice yesterday, but he should be ready for Saturday. Tom Kelly won last week's Griddes with an incredible 18-2 - record. That was good enough to beat the 18-2 record of Tom Kelly. It also beat the 17-3, 16-4, 15-5, and 14-6 records of, you got it, Tom Kelly. That slick guy got around our rules by entering approximately 20 times, putting 52 as the total score on every one. Enough is enough, already. One entry per person, please. Drop your picks off at 420 Maynard if your salivating for a small pizza from Pizza Bob's. And by the way, in case of a tie- breaker, it's Price is Right rules. Closest without going over wins. 1. MICHIGAN at Wisconsin (pick total points) 2. Iowa at Michigan State 3.
